I have nothing against a pedal that looks nice on the outside. But that can't be the *only* place where attention to detail is payed, or you end up with a nice looking pedal that breaks down or only half-ass works.
Oh it's definitely not the only reason. Not even the primary reason. You buy a pedal for its tones. But for some reason I feel it's more than worth it to pay Tom or some other builder 15$ for a custom print/paintjob.
I sure hope I'm still more of a player than a collector

That's a totally reasonable fee for that kind of work. And there's nothing wrong with looking awesome. It's just a priority to me that if I'm buying a pedal, it should be professionally built inside and out.

Yeah. Sometimes it's a challenge to get a clean look inside, but it's inexcusable to sell something
looking like that. Even the board layout is ugly. Right angles, people!

They want $300 for that, how mutch do you think it wold cost you to build one? I'm not intrested I'm just wondering.

Given Time, Labour, Parts, Electricity etc. so the whole thing, $60-80 max probably.
Might be Being generous though, depends on the set up, it could be done for as little as $30.

If you already have all the parts laying around (some of us do), it would be pretty cheap in terms of materials. But you wouldn't be able to do the cool finish they do, because they use silk screens.
It would cost you more in time than parts to build one. I say that because I always do my own PCB layout, and that takes a bit of time to set up.

don't forget marketing, accounting, time spent writing emails, updating website/facebook/forum/twitter, shop or studio rent/bills, any time spent on mods/repairs etc. the list goes on.
that being said - shit pedal looks like shit.

You can bypass all that shit if The Edge picks up your pedals. People go crazy when a famous person uses a piece of gear.

well, chris taylor from grizzly bear uses (or definitely did use, not totally sure if he still does?) a tafm! i like him WAY more than the edge anyways...

From what I've heard, DBA did very little of the things on that list. Especially answering emails. They did have a lot of repair work, however, as you might imagine.
I'm glad to see they have more recently decided to go with fabricated PCBs. It should actually make the pedals cheaper (or give them higher margin, rather) because it saves so much time during assembly. And it *has* to have cut down on repairs.
