Keys should be buried in the mix anyway.

Fixed.

And why in the hell don't you just tell the guitarist and bassist to turn it down a bit? Screw spending money. Turning a volume knob on their amps is free.

The goal is to send the audience away impressed with the performance - not wondering if their new found deafness is permanent or not.

Umm, have you heard of the influences he listed? That's really all about being incredibly loud. Like, as loud as possible.

I suggest making those two half stacks full stacks.

smallsnd/bigsnd wrote:well, i totally disagree with the statement about tube amps and synths, but i guess it depends on what kind of sound you're going for. what kinds of sounds are you using?

personally, i aim to get my keyboard sounds to take the place of a guitarist, so tube amps work really well for me and give a nice gentle amount of amp distortion. i use a nord stage through a fender twin and can make it louder than anyone else on the stage if i want to, though.

115db? seriously? that's louder than an entire band. where are you playing that you need it to be that loud??

I wasn't trying to make too sweeping of a generalization, a Moog getting some nice tube clipping can sound like liquid sexy. I'm just not entirely convinced it's the way to go if your intention is to cut through the mix, especially against a guitar.

Once again, maybe some good compression in your signal chain could make ya boom, it's probably your cheapest option so worth thinking about.

i would also suggest to use a compressor before you are going to spend more money, some gentle compression for keys will have it sat nicely throughout the mix. also, you will have a post-gain, MOAR volume!! :joy:

I don't know why that picture is making me laugh so much........ our space is literally surrounded by amps since we share it with 4 other bands, but we play with half stacks and a drummer that is incapable of playing quietly and it all balances out...... also my brother brings his baritone sax in occasionally, you know it's a very loud saxophone........
