I have never found my original 70's OR120 to be unreliable at all. I like mine a lot the F.A.C knob makes it perfect for any tweaking, it's so good that I'm slowly whittling away the amount of pedals I use just because I don't need it. There is so much coolness in an Orange amp, not only for doom. This amp is the farthest from one trick pony.

Mine has had exactly one issue since I've owned it.

That said, the reissues aren't really in the same stratosphere as the Voice of the World era Oranges--which are very different from the Matamps, etc. The original runs of Orange amps are about as variable as you'll find, 'cause the design was pretty "open to adjustment" from year to year, especially when they bailed on the Matamp shop and started the VOTW stuff.

Oh shit, I just got invited to a Jam. talked to the guy a little bit and he said looking for ambient/post-rock/drone/doom shit to go on.

I am excite. If I can manage to do both the experimental jazz type band I'm in and make this little jam grow into something more...I'm going to be very happy creatively.

Got a mic stand tonight, so I was able to position it in the proper location for recording. This is my first test:

ARC Gamut -> Madbean Egghead Overdrive -> EA Super Collider -> Eventide Timefactor -> TC Trinity Reverb -> Out 1 to Verellen stack with kickdrum mic, Out 2 to Epi Valve Junior with 60's Vocal Mic

I think that will sound much better if you back the mic off a bit. Do you have something that displays when the mic is peaking?

And yeah, I've got it going into a mixer before my computer. I realized after I mixed it down that the overall level of the track (drums included) was a little loud, making the drums clip. As far as the guitars go, they never peak on the mixer or in the software- I DO think I need to be careful when verb and delay kick in though, because I noticed at least after mixdown that it sounded like it was clipping a bit

I've found that at the volume we play and record at, I have to back the mics off a ton. as in several feet! and placement is key. the 2i2 I'm using has the input levels pretty much all the way down. I'd imagine your rig is as loud as mine so play around with it and put em as close as you can without them peaking out. I'm def hearing the clipping in that track. I try to get everyone to play as loud as they possibly can when I'm setting shit up, all effects on and creaming the hell out of the bass/drums/guitar. Another thing I've noticed is that when you ask someone to play as loud as they can while setting up, they tend to turn it all up, but then kinda half ass their picking or drumming, no emphasis, no effort. then when recording a live take everyone gets into it and its WAY louder. so now I encourage them to bash the hell out of their instruments and you can tell when they are doing it, its a big difference.

yea i dig backing the mic off a little, unless that fucker is a low sensitivity dynamic mic which can handle that kind of strong SPL

It's a kick mic, so it seems to be really low in sensitivity compared to the other mic that I'm using which was for vocal interviews in the 60s. It seems like when I back it off the kick mic even an inch makes almost all of the sound disappear

Nick you make some fucking amazing sounding demo's. Do you record at lower volumes mostly? Another thing about backing off is if you like to mix speakers, you get the whole sound. I think it adds depth to the sound as well.

the kick mic is probably way less sensative so adjustment would be a lot smaller. I use sm57, 58's and some cheap condensor mics. For live band recordings, just the condensors

I've never quite grasped mic placement as well as you dudes prolly have, but it sounds a bit muddy. Like... not muddy as in your tone is muddy, but the way it was recorded. My shit always does that when my amps are cranked for some reason and I never figured out how to get rid of it with my meager recording gear.

Amp smart-arses: my FX loop is really fucking quiet. I've never had to use the FX loop before, and earlier I went and bought some new cables to plug my RE-20 in through the loop and it's really really quiet. The amp itself loses no volume, but the effect in the loop sounds like it's coming from underneath or something. I stuck a couple pedals in there, and it's definitely the loop.

It has no volume control or switch, so there's no obvious fix. Thoughts?

There's a setting you have to change, a switch on the back? (or holding down one of the footswitches while you power it on? something like that) It's mentioned in the manual.

My mate says 700 for both head and cab. He's not as keen on selling the head as he is the cab.
