as i may have said before, this is the hidden benefit of having to quit cigarettes for health reasons...the added taxes in recent years have made them so expensive that i'd be utterly broke if i still smoked. seriously, seven dollars a fucking pack? who thought this up?

Can someone who understands economics explain to me why everything is soo expensive here? Is it just people make more monies on average and as such are willing to pay more so retailers/distributors bone them?
you would think they would budge but they still havent its like shops want to go down on fire then source better prices

It's simple....you'll pay for it. So, why not make it more expensive?

countries with cheap prices on food generally have cheap labor, widespread poverty and higher infant mortality rates. the land is relatively cheaper than land in more developed nations. the food is transported by foot or donkey. so cheap everything = cheap everything. if everyones poor the homeostasis for food prices will naturally follow the median income. the prices come down when people buy less and it becomes obvious prices need to come down. look at gas, out dependency dictates price. price drops in gas always correlate to public willingness to use alternative energy. they undercut anything they consider a threat so that it becomes bad business to go green. then after all the green industries go bankrupt or overseas, they raise the prices higher than they were the last time it was motivating the green startup companies. big international business cartel crushes disorganized segmented underfunded new businesses with price manipulation that can be done at zero loss of profits. its math meets human stupidity meets human greed. how one side of your brain enslaves the other.

well, the basic problem with prices in Oceania is that pretty much everything has to be shipped there, usually by sea because there just isn't enough air freight capacity to import a continent's or a large, well populated island chain's worth of everything needed to live. prices in Hawaii are typically quite a bit higher than in the mainland US. though i don't know the specifics, i'd guess that the Oz/NZ governments probably have fairly stiff import duties/tariffs that jack up prices as well, especially on products such as tobacco which are seen as socially harmful by the Government. it probably costs more to ship a pack of smokes to Brisbane than it does to manufacture them.

A bummer for all. I'm sure he'd say something along the lines of "Dying is gay".
