It's just like vinyl. They sell a lower quality product under the guise of a better sound (or just nostalgia) so that people actually have to buy it.
In other words, selling lower quality products to uneducated consumers for more money.

The way I see it, you sell a cassette, and provide a digital download. The hard medium doesn't even matter when there's a download code. Plus, cassettes are cheap, come in cool colors, easy to do splits on (obvious side separation), and are cheap. So, selling a $3-5 cassette helps everyone involved out. And a lot of folks have shitty cars, dude.
I know a band that recorded $3 singles onto plastic plates, played like a 45. I bought one, shit was cool.

I think it makes sense depending on the recording/"sound." ie: Shot Forth Self Living makes sense on a cassette.

I once wrote a song called "Butt Flap Sally" that goes to the tune of "Mustang Sally" and is about a woman with a butt so flabby it hangs down the mudflaps on an 18-wheeler.
I also once wrote a song in the style of terrible, modern mainstream hiphop song called "Swipe It(Like a Credit Card)" that's about sticking your dick between a chick's buttcheeks but not into her rectum.

I want to hear those songs way, way too much.

This man speaks the truth.
Besides, CD's are equally irrelevant as tapes or records these days.
As far as quality is concerned most of that depends more on how it was recorded than how it is consumed.
MP3=Sounds like shit!

I haven't listened to De-Loused in the Comatorium high, or at least not the whole album.
I confess that I want that to change.
