A lot of the old Devi style fuzzes had reverse oriented transistors. Old DBA, I think (maybe) old dwarcraft

Yeah the old version Fuzz War did this if I recall and there were a lot of issues with DIY builds. So Betteroffshred mentioned having tried flipping the 5089s but still had issues. Wain, did you do the other mods mentioned earlier by EYG or did you go with the "original" schematic with just the transistors reversed?

I Only changed the 170k/17k bias pair to 470k/47k as we thought that was maybe a misreading of the parts? I’ll verify in the images tonight when I get home. Everything else is stock besides what I mentioned in my previous post .
I lied. I just changed all the cap values to match the schematic and it's pretty farty fuzzy now.
I used 100n caps in place of all the 1uF, 220n for C7, and a 1nF for C8. I am going back to the 100n caps.

Additional question - where is the Gain Pot for the "hi" section located? In EYGs Schematic it's on the Emitter follower before the inverted NPNs, on imJonWains it's on the first flipped NPN stage - which one is correct now?

No idea I never saw a hand trace either.

I screwed up on my second look over hand trace there. It should be on the previous transistor as per the schematic, my bad.

Here's a corrected schematic. The transistor positioning is corrected and I believe the only thing not correct 100% on the schematic are the non-polarized cap values now. I replaced most of the 1uF coupling caps with 100nF to make it more usable. I am also not sure how the J201 (Q1) is normally biased, I went for 4.5V. If anyone else plays with coupling cap values I'd like to hear what works or gets closest to the stock pedal's sound. I can update the schematic with recommended cap values and other suggestions as we go.
Coupling caps Notes: (see schematic for specifics)
1uF: For me was 100% boomy and sputtery sound wise with oscillations.
100nF: Boost-overdrive-High Gain distortion with a lot of volume and adjust-ability. Can be noisy at high gain and will sometimes oscillate with all controls maxed.

Awesome!
If you plan to go into a layout with this, just mind the wrong pinout of the J201 - Gate is Pin 3 on SOT23 Devices.

Rock on!!
If you guys have got things right, it should be able to get a really nice sustaining clangy low gain too.

I don't know anything about anything but if this could be a pot, that could be interesting.

Oops! I’ll correct the j201 pin out labeling when I get home tonight.
If EYG still has boards to sell I probably won’t bother with a layout for this since it’s the same anyway. If he’s not selling them then I’ll do a layout and throw it up on osh park shared designs for whomever.

Any word on Boards? I'll start playing with a design if PCBs aren't available...
Also...Anyone got an improbability drive? I'd be down to reverse it and put the designs up. Maybe it's worth working through the Infanem catalog since all their stuff is expensive now.

i had a STEP and loved it but sold it for recording gear last year over here in thailand. would be cool if someone traced that so i could have that in my life again at some point. its a very simple but versatile pedal that was really useful for both live and recording situations. that pedal had jack issues too when i had it just like my driving notion did.

I just shot EYG a PM regarding availability.
