Tomorrow night I have tickets to the Swans while across town I also have tickets to see Tim Hecker. I've seen the Swans a bunch of times but I heard this was their last album with this lineup. I've never seen Tim Hecker. If I knew the Swans would come back around for one more tour then I'd definitely see Hecker. The Swans and Michael Gira are definitely in my top 5 of influences but I just can't totally decide which I'll see.

If the last time you saw Swans was great, go see Hecker. Keep your memories positive & intact while experiencing something new. Not saying Swans wouldnt be good again, just encouraging diverse experiences. I havent seen Hecker live but have heard it's very submersive experience, visually and aurally.

I ended up going to Hecker but it started so late that I could have easily gone to both so I'm kinda bummed out by that. The rest of the Hecker bill did absolutely nothing for me but his set was cool...not mind blowing. If I had a time machine I would have definitely seen the Swans but I'm glad I finally got to see Tim Hecker play live. Hopefully the Swans will come back around before they break up this lineup.

Hecker is good but the sound was alright and it wasn't a very interesting performance. I was hoping he'd do more off of Love Streams. The fact that it started super late was also annoying.

finally performed as 'too many of us' for the first time yesterday. was very cool, using a midi controller is surprisingly simple. I still have some kinks to work out tho.. I mapped 'play' to a button, but it will only play when it's held down. how do I configure it so it's 'latching'? another thing; whenever I set up the output to come out the interface, it completely bypassed audiomulch, so I ended up using the headphones out from my computer.. last thing; where to start with full range speakers? not looking for anything crazy powerful, but I might as well go for something that can keep up with drums if it's not that much more expensive. I eq'd my carvin x100b and v4 to be as neutral as possible, but they were absolutely overkill.. I'm all about volume most of the time, but with this kind of stuff I really want it to be able to breathe.

Depends on the midi controller and the interface.

Full range speakers, if you want them cheap, can be PA speakers.

Did you set the audio settings in the actual computer's system preferences/control panel to use the interface as the output or just within audio mulch?

Probably better to find passive speakers and get good beefy amps. I have some of those Behringer Europower QSC power amp clones that I got for a good price and they work well.

So I've been working on a drone piece which I've basically assembled by recording little snippets of various folk instruments I have lying around (a bit of generic old-time banjo riffing and strumming the hell out of an open A5 chord on my mandolin) and slowing down/Paulstretching the hell out of them. It sounds really cool, especially on the mandolin samples because you can hear all the overtones and transients, and even the sound of the pick hitting the strings, really opening up. I'm talking here about taking maybe a 1-second sample and stretching it out to a few minutes. I've had great results layering the original sample with duplicates pitch-shifted 1 and 2 octaves down. I've been doing all this stretching and shifting in Audacity. I've also found a really good free granular delay plugin called Argotlunar which is good for weirding up and generally corrupting things, there's some really cool pitch-shifting/arpeggiating controls on it. I recommend grabbing it. Added a one-note droning pad from a synth to anchor it and I'm away...

This may even get turned into a coherent piece of music at some point.
