so I just got the 2014 SG Special Bass, and it just feels so good. I got it for a good price used and in excellent condition, the only thing that bothers me are the pickups (and the anniversary fretmarker, but meh, I can live with that). they just seem a bit boring to me. haven't tried it through my rig, just been playing home through my soundcard, so can't really say anything definite about them, but I'm already kinda thinking of changing them. I guess they're the same used in current Thunderbirds?

any of yous got any ideas or opinions on pickups for it? I already have a P-bass and 4001-copy, so maybe some other flavours (though I have to say, I'm more into classic than modern sounds). I have zero knowledge or understanding of PU's, but I'm kinda interested in the Bisonic/Darkstar/Dagstar/whatevs's, but they seem pretty pricey. is it in any way justified or just hype? are there any cheaper imitations of them?

Probably one that doesn't exist because it isn't as practical/doesn't sound as good. Or maybe a handmade Epiphone Valve Jr or something like that. A 5 watt design with very little components, no relays, no fancy voltage, nothing hampering performance. Hiwatts are pretty indestructible.

i have a SS combo from the 80's back at home. I didnt use it for over 15 years...and on one of my trips back home, i found it deep in my parents garage, under so much shit...dusty...and shit.

i took up stairs, dusted it off, plugged it in...worked as if it was bought yesterday!

this was about 6 years ago...the other week, my brother went into my parents garage and found the amp there (which is surprising since my parents have recently moved house, and the fact that they made sure they moved the amp as well, is pretty cool of them) he took it back to his place, turned it on...again, no issues.

i think one day when we are dead, it will be in one of the garage's and one of our kids will have a similar story to write in a Doom Room thread.

Took the Ape Blaster to practice last night and tried it out a few different ways and I couldn't get it to work in my setup. The sound is massive and if I were playing stuff that had no cleans I would have this as my main tone. I tried it on bass before our bassist got there and it sounded like a Ritual on steroids. Crisp, tons of lows with a notched mids thing going on that just crunches. I imagine once grind bands catch wind of this thing it will become a contender for the HM2.

If any of you duders want to try it out, let me know and I'll hook you up on the cheaps.

I'll pm you when work isn't so busy. It will no doubt punish whatever amp you run it into. Switch goes from hella low end thick fuzz to tighter lows with a mid hump (kinda like the elements on the 400hz mids selection and mid knob goosed way up high) kinda hits that old school slayer tone through my Matamp.

I love it, but it just ain't in the cards right now. I'm sure a month from now I'll join a band that has a no cleans ever policy and be hitting you up for another Ape Blaster. I feel bad returning it to you because I feel like i'm not supporting a fantastic pedal and builder. I don't mind taking a hit on reselling it for less as long as you don't have a problem with it. I feel like the chance to play around with it is worth any money lost.

I have an 80's Peavey VTM120 that I've had for about 10 years. It still has the original tubes in it, a couple knobs/pot shafts are sheared off, it's missing some screws and been dropped off a stage or the back of a van a couple of times and it works perfectly. The head shell is about 2" thick though, the thing is a monster.
