This one was inside of my two Pearl SS-102 combos(the other one had a Celestion G12H-100):
It's very heavy, a little over 8 kg.
Could it be an old EV-speaker?

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
Thanks for the advice. The speaker only has 4 digits written on the side. 7839(pretty sure the last digit is a 9, could be 0 or 8).rustywire wrote:It was a shoulda-quoted-post-but-didn't-because-I-didn't-realize-search-new-posts-sent-me-back-a-few-pages-from-where-thread-is-now response toInconuucl wrote:rustywire wrote:Check on the bottom of the cone for alphanumeric codes, as well as the basket & magnetic. No logos, names or other digits. Someone on a group on Facebook told me it was probably an old Altec-speaker, but I can't find any pics of a matching/similar speaker when googling.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
Steel is great. Don't play it enough, but always find it more intuitive and inspiring than standard guitar.
Buying suggestion - go Rondo or vintage. Most of the cheaper steels are horrible - Morrelli, no name mic stuff from eBay. Most of the modern midrange stuff is fine, but not super impressive - the Recording King isn't bad, but I thought the Gretsch and Peavey were laughable. Rondo offers a couple of nice steels at unbeatable prices - the SX models, I haven't tried any of the new ones - and they seem to be the only source for a low cost 8 string steel. If not Rondo, vintage. Put in a little bit of effort and you can find a vintage steel for cheap - slightly more than something like the Recording King, similar price range to the Gretsch. Might need to invest in new tuners, especially if you're buying an instrument for the stage, but you'll end up with something unique, something that will sound like little else (old weird microphonic oversized single coils ftw), for less than a vim squire.

I built it in about 3 hours out of random junk I had lying around.
Here's some non-country sound exploration I did on the lap plank:

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
The main reason I was looking at the Gretsch and Peavey is because I work at a music store and could get them for hella cheap. That makes a lot of sense though and I don't mind spending a bit more to get a much better instrument.
You guys are definitely giving me tons of inspiration on this though... I'm definitely gonna give one a go if I can find the right one. Anyone have recommendations on timings? I was thinking open C# minor.

I've been using regular old C6, which is the standard lap steel tuning. I like it, easy to find triads and scales

"Mate, that fuzz is fookin insane" - compliment received last night, possibly best compliment ever?
It was this old mod-looking guy at a wedding in Birmingham. Loves the sound of the Cbread Fuzzrite, apparently!

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
I'm looking for a single pedal to fill in some holes of weirdness on my board. I'd love ring mod, filter, octave stuff, chorus, maybe bit crushing. Just all sorts of dope stuff that I won't use often enough to justify a pedal for each sound, but I still want. I'm thinking bitquest, but maybe there is a cheaper alternative that does lots of cool stuff?

No, Bitquest. Just do it, it's so worth it.

I probably will. Seems like the exact perfect thing for what I'm trying to do.Inconuucl wrote:No, Bitquest. Just do it, it's so worth it.

Kinda want a Holowon Tape Soup. :o Is the company still in business? Looks like they haven't been active on their Reverb shop this year.
