This sounds like how I spent a chunk of the 90's. Horrible breakup, no car, no job, no fixed address. Some of it got better, other parts feel like I'm selling my soul off on an installment plan. Existential crises suck, but thank you for reminding me there are far more immediate kinds of problems to have.

My complaint: passed over for one promotion a few months ago, up for another I don't want as much now. If I don't get this one, either I plan on doing my current job until I retire (or die), or leave the company and my tenure behind to start over somewhere else. No idea if what I can do is in fashion this month with the current el jefe. He tends to talk around things so he doesn't alienate anyone. A straight "no" is so much better than a vague "work on this thing I can't really define and try again in six months." A Unabomber shack in the wilderness is sounding so good right now...

Yeah man, my work place does the "let's not upset anyone with straight answers" bullshit too. I'd rather some say "dude you're doing this wrong" than "well let's see what your growth looks like in 6 months" .. I've got a growth??

Brian Adams is only 44? The fuck? Oh, Ryan Adams. I'm still doing this! Although in my defence, Ryan Adams has had the cultural footprint of a ghost to me.

Anyway, you ever have that borderline suicidal depression out of fucking nowhere, prompted by who knows what and then made worse by a culmination of small events or interactions with other people? What's up with that? The phases of the moon or something? Thought I was done with this shit a long while back. :idk:

Yeah man, like once a month. Usually it's something small that actually sets me off so I just look like a crazy asshole. But in reality the small thing was just the last straw. I'm really flipping out over the last 30 years of my life

So I just switched from smoking to vaping. Working out well, except "THE MAN" is trying to either outlaw it completely, or tax it to where it's more expensive than cigarettes.

or tax it to where it's more expensive than cigarettes.
given how high the cigarette tax is already in any civilized US location, is this even possible?

The thing is though, you don't want to get money back on your income tax return. Ideally, you should either owe nothing/get nothing back, or even owe money. When you get money back it means you overpaid your taxes during the year. The government took that money and earned interest off of it. Essentially, you gave the government an interest-free loan. Ideally, you could have been investing that extra $X amount of money each paycheck into a high interest rate savings account, cd, money market, stocks, mutual funds etc and earned interest the whole year. I understand it is nice to get a lump sum of money at once, but it is even nicer sitting on your ass and collecting interest all year long.

I got back $9 on my federal and I owe $19 state. This is a good thing.

or better yet invest for that average 5-8% easy return rather than the measly 1-2% bank interest
