I think the use of the term overrated needs some qualification behind it, especially when you're talking about movies like Citizen Kane.
Its importance can't be disputed especially from a technical standpoint. From a story standpoint it's just okay and Orson Welles was the only one who could actually act his way out of a bag.

El Topo was interesting. horrible acting, makes me uncomfortable that he said he actually raped the grrL that played Mara to get it to look right, but there was some cool stuff. engrossing.

Watched two animations a couple of days ago: Paranorman and Wreck-It Ralph. Paranorman was great; Wreck-It Ralph was a little disappointing. It's still a good film, just not the amazing piece of animation I was led to believe. Its humour and visuals were very childish, which was not what I was expecting. I got all the video game jokes and everything, but it still felt like a kids movie. Paranorman is something everyone should everyone watch and is not for kids. I think Coraline is a little better, but it's well worth a watch.

Paranorman is good. really cute.
yah. i liked parts of Wreck It Ralph, but was uncomfortable feeling my peen twitch every time Sarah Silverman said something. i have such an angry boner for her. hearing her dirty ass coming out of an animated kid's mouth.... awwwwwkwarrrrd.
Awkward Erections. so an album title i want.

I wasn't that impressed by Wreck-It Ralph. Fell asleep like 2/3 of the way in because it just didn't go past a kid's level.
And it is impossible for me to separate the voices from their real life actors. It was essentially a movie about Jack McBrayer, John C. Reilly, and Sarah Silverman that someone turned into an animation.
Now I want to see Paranorman. Glad it's on Netflix.

Saw Antichrist.

Then saw Riki-oh.

Dude!!! I thought I would be the only one to have a weird crush on an animated CHILD! I didn't know why it was. It felt very uncomfortable, partly because subconsciously I knew why it was but my conscious side avoided it delicately.

This. It's a movie about artifice after all.
Also, it's kind of ridiculous to take one small "plothole" (which is a debatable) and declare that Citizen Kane doesn't make sense, as if the movie were really about his last words anyway and that wasn't just a storytelling device. If it were, then its core is just cheap simplistic psychology (which is a more interesting critique than "it's boring" or "it doesn't make sense"). But then you've ignored all it has to express about power and identity and memory, etc. (There's also no "desert coast of Florida", no actual pteradactyls flying there, no cockatoos with holes in their heads in place of their eyes, etc....but if you're determined to dismiss any movie that has any mistakes, then I wonder what you do watch...)

Joseph Cotten couldn't act his way out of a bag? Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles would seem to disagree with your assessment.

lol. of COURSE it's ridiculous. you think i'm being serious. eeeeee. i RARELY do that. that's not why i don't enjoy that movie.
onyxrhino wrote:....which is a more interesting critique than "it's boring" or "it doesn't make sense").
but what if a movie WAS boring? KickAss 2 was a shit movie because it was boring. sure you can be more specific and say that instead of making a parody or deconstruction of a Superhero movie like the first one they forgot and made a shitty uninteresting superhero movie... but it was just written where all the humor and characters and dialogue was flat and.... boring. i dunno. if a movie bores me and doesn't grab hold of me, it obviously doesn't interest me. i don't spend a lot of time on things that don't interest me, not breaking things down or getting in depth for why i don't like something follows from that.
i don't THINK that it's because it's an older movie, i like some older stuff and i can enjoy slow paced explorations of ideas. i've watched Kane a couple times all the way through, but the few times i've tried to see what i'm missing i get bored and shut it off and watch something else.
MEH.

It's just an utterly lazy, infantile critique. "It's boring"...what made it boring? Was it too predictable? Too slow? Were the characters too hard for you to empathize with? When you just dismiss a work as "boring" you're telling me more about yourself than about the work. It suggests you're some kind of ADD kid who just expects movies, books, music, etc. to tickle your funny bone or scare you with the big pictures and sounds. It suggests you're someone who should just stick to the basic pleasures of strip shows and firework displays, because anything requiring any thought to process would be a waste.
