To me, fuzzes are a bit more compressed, they seem a lot thicker in the low-mids, and have less sizzle to them through my tube amp. Less sub-lows and highs (which is fine with me, most of what we think of as beefy lows are actually low-mids). You know that Thumpinator thing which is a high-pass filter set at like 40Hz that a bunch of guys over at TB have started using? Tube amps naturally do the same thing.

^The thicker low mids and reduction in fizziness is my main experience with fuzz through tubes vs solid state. Although that is a speaker thing too, the extra compression and smoother sound is niiice.

Well, it's a 100-watt amp, I just have two of the power tubes pulled out right now. If I go back up to 100 watts, I'll definitely need an attenuator. And actually no, the cab I'm using isn't that great, it's just a 4x10 carvin that I bought because I'm too poor to go drop serious money on a good cab. But it's still so fucking loud, that I can barely hear the monitor that's right in front of me. :idk: Oh well ...

Smoother sound is what I'm noticing,...less harshness,...but I will admit that I'm not done eqing and messing with the gain structure of the new to me CL.

Even though I'm not cranking the hell out of my amp I'm still preferring it; clean or dirty, to any SS or Hybrid I've been using. I definitely do want to try a power attenuator so I can crank the shit out of the amp though, but I think I'll wait till I get my cab situation sorted.

To me the weight and maintenance is a fine trade off. My rack was an awkward 60ish pounds to haul around. The SVT is less awkward to carry even though it's heavier. If I turn into one of these Geriatric TBers who complain about weight and their backs hurting and being old and shit,...I'll just pick up a dolly or a cart or something.

As far as maintenance; I'm happy to learn how to bias and do the simple mundane stuff that won't kill me and refer the amp to a pro for bigger jobs. That said,...I'll keep my SS rig for a backup in case there are any unforeseen or lengthy repairs.

The way I see it, if I become too broken and weak to lift a heavy amp over my head to stack it on top of cabs, I don't get the privilege of playing out of it anymore.

FWIW, the new Ampeg Portaflex teensy amps actually sounded pretty great when I tried one out the other day... :duck:

Deltz - i twiddled his fucking knobbos SO HARD. yah. i took a pic, played around a bunch, set it back. it was a Peavey something? whichever one people that want to sound like Tool use?

BigChiefy/MonkahMonkahDance'ah - cool! good to know. that's actually what i'd be most interested in playing around with, is a fuzz/distortion toob paired with clean/modulation stuff through what i have now.

Warwicky/AvonDongalz - yeah man. fuck that weight bullshit. if it's 40 lbs difference suck it up. if it's like ss is 4 lbs while toob is 200 lbs.... that's a little different. but carry your gear, play and shut the fuck up. silly asses.

The sound like Tool is probably a Mesa Boogie. I seem to recall you mentioning it was a Mesa Boogie earlier in this thread,...although it's plausible that whatever Peavey Tube Bass Amp might have the same tone stack as an M/B 400/400+. I know that Paul D' Amour used M/B gear,...but Justin Chancellor is a Gallien Kruger user. So do you want to sound like Paul,...or Justin.

In my case I want to sound like me. If that tone happens to be close to someone famous,....not my problem.

:tool fanboi hat on:

Actually both Paul and Justin used Mesas for a while. And Justin didn't change to GK heads until he became friends with Jeff Caxide sometime between Lateralus and 10000 days.

Undertow: Ric => Mesa 400+
Aenima: Stingray and Wal => Mesa 400+
Lateralus: Wal => Mesa M2000
10000 days: Wal => GK

Ah,...I see.

There was a time when I was considering dat M2000,...wound up with an SWR SM500 instead. I didn't get nearly enough time with that amp as I picked it up right around the time that my young adult life started unraveling and I dumped everything I had save my Warwick in a pawnshop.

I'm not a huge Tool Fanboi but Justin's tone has always been quite excellent. I do love me those GK RB amps.

Although honestly, real tube saturation doesn't usually start happening until you've been playing for a couple of hours. Trace Elliot V-Type around midnight every Friday night? OH SWEET JEBUS THAT SHIT SOUNDS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.

True, it’s the same with every tube amp I’ve ever played, the longer it’s on the better it sounds.

tube amps sound the very best, “tone of Gods” etc. just before they blow up LOL

mmmmmmmmm...... necro-fetishism.... just saying, if you can get a grrL to lay in a bathtub full of ice for 15 minutes then either groan like a zombie whilst chained up or lay motionless (i don't judge) while you do your thing, she is a KEEPER.

anybody used a Traynor YBA 200? there's one a bud pointed me to on CL for $400. seeing if (s)he'll do a trade for a bass or an Motu 828 or sumphin' (a bit tapped on cash till Friday)..... is that a good price?
