Everything I've seen is evidence that peoples' experiences are not based in universal themes, and that there are social relations that are not visible to everyone all the time (...invisible?). We only get access to them through 'rising/falling' in some arbitrary (but heavily enforced) social hierarchy, which--to paraphrase a huge number of scholars of transgender issues--is one of the reasons there's so much animosity directed toward people. Your 'live and let live' philosophy makes perfect sense to me, and it seems humane, but it runs up against a wall when you consider whether we have a responsibility to one another.

Also, the Irish thing is poorly deployed by many, and creates a false allegory. Though, in support of your point that I don't agree with: Nazis committed to propaganda that claimed Jewish men had enormous penises; the English said the same of the Irish; Americans say this about black men still. Sexual fear/fear of miscegenation/justification for mass lynchings and dominion. This is a sidebar conversation, but it is about boners, which is never totally OT. (All of these groups also positioned the 'other' as darker-skinned or swarthy, for what it's worth.)

I don't want to write a lot, because I'd hate to re-rail us from this important di-ska-ssion, but we're just talking about 'identity politics,' which never goes anywhere. But you've got to be willing to consider that there's more out there than your worldview will allow you to see (which I why I'm acknowledging my own ignorance and not trying to be a dick who just shouts 'you're wrong' at you). There are more things in heaven and earth, Rustywire, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Very true!

What I like about this stage in the race is that after months of appealing to party extremes each candidate will have to prove how "moderate" they are without alienating their base.
