Oh, sorry, I was hoping lordgalvar was gonna chime in. He definitely knows nasty ring mods better than I do.

I like Green Ringers :D (*blasphemy*) :idk:

The Moog is nice, but doesn't really get that nasty.

I haven't tried a Gonkulator, but the demos sound good and they're not too expensive. I guess you could always go with an old Frequency Analyzer (don't know how the newer ones are). I've wanted to try the Wilson Mycelium. Those sound good from the demos too. I guess it really depends on what you're looking for.

Ring mod is as crazy or tame as what you put into it. You can do a ton of stuff in a lot of different ways.

If you just want out of the box crazy, it isn't really going to happen with any of the production ones in pedal format.

Look for ones with a carrier in and good preamps (frostwave or moog or something), get a neat drone synth/microphone/osc fuzz/oscillator and use that as the carrier. Or take it off a pitch shifter or sampler with stereo outs.

Passive is better at all this, but require more attention for the most part.

Moog+microphone+a/B switch+some oscillator will be a pretty good setup....you have an octave up feedbacker, talk box/Dale machine, ring mod, and crazy modulator.

Thanks for the help.

Perhaps I need to revisit the Moogerfooger. That sounded whacky as shit. LOL

Yeah, the Moog is definitely one of the most versatile ring mods. (Especially with all the knobs controllable by expression pedal.)

The tremolos are to die for. :doom:

Lordgalvar, do you have any experience with the Synth Rotek passive ring mod?

That is the synthrotek in that video. Well, the pcb at least (don't know what diodes are in the synthrotek...but probably the same as I used). Pretty sure the transformers are the same.

I have another one with different ge diodes that I haven't tested yet (really old Mazda ones).

It is the same as this one: http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgsrr.html

You don't really need the board though...they are fairly simple. I just had a gift card or something.

This seems relevant, Melos content (not my auction, just part of my disease to look at every damn ring mod listed on EBay):

The Melos sounds really good. I like it a lot. Only thing is that it has the line/instrument switch that is always on; it gave give pedals trouble (like all those old effects) but can give really nice preamp gain too. I would say it is the on the better, most balanced, and well behaved ones out there. Supposedly it is based on the maestro, but I don't know for sure.

Take two 9v batteries but they seem to last a while (and on/off switch!).

I should play it more. Haha.

I've owned one of these what 3 times maybe? It's not a standard ring mod or even close to it. LOL! In fact, it doesn't even do really a ring mod sound that I could discern. So I'm not sure how the fuck it's classified as one. I mean, I guess it does some the squeally high pitched ring modish tones, but they sound god awful to me.
