I've gone through this whole thing already before in this thread. I think it's a bit silly, but I admit that I built a JC-fanboi board back about 5 years ago. My rock/metal covers band had picked up like 6 or 7 Tool songs and they just weren't working right without the effects. So I went out and got a lot of the same effects that he uses.
But the thing is, I quickly realized that just doing covers doesn't fulfill my creative side, so I started an originals band too. And I eventually swapped out the JC pedals for other pedals that can do similar stuff, but also other stuff I want for my originals. So it really comes down to whether you can feel totally fulfilled just doing covers.

In all seriousness...given that right now all I can really do comfortably are covers, I must agree with this. Although I
am getting better with my blues-lines theory.

Of course those songs will be missing something without the same or at least similar effects,....but for me,....when I play a cover,....nailing the original isn't what I'm interested in. I'll admit that that's how I used to think, to have any credibility it
had to sound exactly like the original...but taking it and putting your own spin on has become more fun to me.
Mecha Shiva did a cover of Massive Attacks Angel which starts out with sort of a deep sub bass sound,....which I could have done with my OC-2,...but to make it more dramatic in a trio format,....with the guitar mimicking the "You; Are My Angel" vocal line I played it an octave up (C on the A) then dive bombed to the low C on the B string and jumped on the fuzz for the "Chorus" part. I think that was a function of making it work with what you have but it made the song more interesting to me than just playing the low octave part from start to finish and just have it kinda stumble into the chorus.
It's different if you are a tribby or cover band though I guess. You audience is expecting to recognize the song from the intro on.
For the CW Fanboi though,....he is pretty much using Wolstenholme's sounds for his own stuff (I caught a video, which I'm unable to find, of his original band and it's pretty much a carbon copy of Muse),...and that's fine if he wants to do that,....but there isn't much credibility or originality in that though. I'm sure he would argue that there are differences between his band and Muse,....to which I would say,....yeah,...Muse is skinnier, richer and more British.
I do feel somewhat dirty,...basically talking shit behind his back. The guy has given me some smug remarks in the past which I've just brushed off,....but I don't really intend to talk shit about him. I'm certainly not offend but what he,...or any sort of tribby or cover act does,...it's just simply doesn't float mah boat.

Well, yeah. You have a band that is largely originals, and you're just doing a cover here and there. In that kind of situation, fuck the song up to holy hell and make it your own. But when you're a "cover" band playing bars for drunks, they (and the bar owner) want authenticity. It is definitely creatively stifling, but it can still be fun. But that's why I started my other band on the side, as my real outlet.

Yes,...Authenticity was the word I was looking for.
FWIW Angel is the only cover we've ever played. It was well received. I think we may have an unmixed rehearsal recording of it somewhere.

I watched that video of his pedalboard again, and now all I can think is "Why are those knobs on that Russian BMP not all cranked?!?!?!"
It's so fucking close! But, so wrong!
Also, the way he pronounces "Flanger"! FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Is it odd I'm rage-ing at things that nobody else is?
