there's a Zappa tour from 1973 from which a number of audience tapes are available, the best being from 3/11/73 Arlington, TX. the great thing about this tour is that it's lyric-free with the exception of "Montana" and Frank's interactions with the band and audience, allowing the terrific band (Zappa/Ponty/Underwood/Underwood/Fowler/Fowler/Duke/Humphrey) to be heard to full effect.

dubkitty wrote:let me qualify slightly: the first couple of Sabs albums were unassailable, and the Dio stuff is OK if only cos i like Dio's personality. but there were a LOT of awful records, too. yeah, you can also say that about the Rolling Stones, but the Stones had a far longer period of sustained greatness and their awful stuff is quite less awful.

for me SY are more a great idea for a band than a great band. Branca and punk are two great tastes that go great together, but SY had many flaws (a large percentage of which were named "Kim") and never really had the material to go with the concept. Mission of Burma were way more out than SY but had songs that stick in the head too. like Beck, SY's influence on other artists is more interesting than their actual work.
Total with you on Sabbath being overrated. Second Lp is essential, couple of decent songs tossed around elsewhere, otherwise meh. Still better than most sacred cows, but still meh.

But SY? :wha?:   :grumpy: I'd argue that their influence on the world was the negative, some of it anyway - nirvana, nostalgia culture, rise in offset prices. But provided climate change doesn't kill us all first, our robot overlords are going to be slam dancing to Daydream Nation, Dirty, and 1KLeaves until the sun explodes.

should have been the producer rather than a member. no way on earth is he in the same league as the three big guys.

I'm sorry but Dio fucking sucks ass. His vocals make me want to put a hat pin in my ear drum. Ozzy was the only thing that made Sabbath good. Once he left, they went to shit and Ozzy's solo career boomed for many many years.

You know who's overrated? Fucking Phish man. God, who likes that band anyway? Some old wanker living in the UK? Some OLD, grumpy wanker.

i like Phish. i don't LOVE them, but in a live setting they're really fun. i'd do anything to avoid their studio albums, though...they took the whole Grateful Dead thing of "we're a concert band, so it doesn't matter if our records are shitty" to a total extreme.

I hate Phish.. I have no reason for it other than if you live on the mid to north west cost them and other gratefuldeadesque music is hard to escape.. or so it seems :idk:
