Thanks for the lowdown! Class 5 is my dirty amp. I've got cleans covered, elsewhere. I love the sound of the Class 5, particularly with treble boosters. And, I certainly wouldn't wanna lose that magic. But, the OR15 keeps taunting me with its switchable power and effects loop. I guess I'd have to spend some time with one to see if it really could replace the Class 5.Uncle Grandfather wrote: Too different, both really great but the Marshall has "that" sound when you don't wanna deal with the usual SPL involved of bigger Marshall's, and the Orange has it's own creamy thing going on. Depending on your taste the Orange is probably the more versatile of the two, especially if you're into rolling NOS tubes. That might not be everyone's cup of tea but I have fun fine tuning my amps this way and the OR15 responds really well.
edit: the class 5 and or15 have their own "house" sound and are different enough but are still both el84 based and share that families characteristics along with having little headroom. you might check out the ampeg gvt15h too, as a compliment to your class 5 or as a replacement depending on your needs. its 15/7 watts powered from 6v6. There's nothing really special or wrong with how it sounds when driven into distortion, but it doesn't sound like my old Gemini I. But for me, its real strength is in the headroom. I wanted something low watt for around the house as a pedal platform and it delivers that in spades. Can stay clean louder than you would want considering its wattage. So if you mainly get your dirt from pedals it might be worth a look. Its built in reverb sounds really good too![]()
one other thought I had was that the OR15 is kinda noisy, I tried everything I could think and all the tips I could find online, but its just a noisy circuit...not a big deal but I remember I spent awhile trying to deal with it when I first got mine to no avail. it sounds so good that its really a non-issue
