right with you on Petty. when they did the Traveling Wilburys project my first response was "when did Petty get to the level of Dylan, Harrison, or Orbison???"
let me ruffle some feathers:
the New York Dolls.
Black Sabbath.
Oasis.
Pavement.
Genesis (all lineups)
Sonic Youth.

Re: Your Most Overrated Bands
let me qualify slightly: the first couple of Sabs albums were unassailable, and the Dio stuff is OK if only cos i like Dio's personality. but there were a LOT of awful records, too. yeah, you can also say that about the Rolling Stones, but the Stones had a far longer period of sustained greatness and their awful stuff is quite less awful.
for me SY are more a great idea for a band than a great band. Branca and punk are two great tastes that go great together, but SY had many flaws (a large percentage of which were named "Kim") and never really had the material to go with the concept. Mission of Burma were way more out than SY but had songs that stick in the head too. like Beck, SY's influence on other artists is more interesting than their actual work.

that's beautiful. Brooooce's whole Fanfare For The Common Man thing always rang hollow to me, as if he read about Woody Guthrie and decided "i could do that." no, Bruce, you couldn't.gnomethrone wrote:Crucial Unit had a song called "Bruce Springsteen Needs the Workers but the Workers Don't Need Bruce Springsteen"

Re: Your Most Overrated Bands
I always thought Oasis were adequately rated. They're generally inoffensive rock music for people who don't really like rock music but like to think they do. They're incredibly popular of course, but also very mundane. People seem to dig middle of the road rock music in huge numbers.
They're just the Foo Fighters but British, and without that insufferable nice guy persona that Grohl keeps pushing. They're a bunch of self-aware tossers, they seem to relish that, and they desperately try to remain relevant by making TV appearances and swearing.
People who actually like music don't really like them, do they?

I think this applies to Tool, as well. Yes, the music is great but they take themselves way too seriously. Alt-Jock Intellectualism. Not a musician but I that applies to Joe Rogan too.repoman wrote:Is Frank Zappa rated at all?
I seem to always read how amazing Zappa's music is and everytime I listen to it it's pure masturbation with him singing about poop and pee and cringey edgy stuff.

Re: Your Most Overrated Bands
Every Tool album contains about 2 and a half minutes worth of "hell yeah this is awesome" material, and about 45 minutes of fluff leading up to it.

Re: Your Most Overrated Bands
the thing about Zappa IMO is that he figured out early that the only way to make white America listen to his fairly outré compositions and bitter dystopianism was to cloak them in decidedly dubious "humor" that the fratboy morons he despised couldn't resist. i really only enjoy his more instrumental albums nowadays because of this. it's unbearable to listen to the scabrous groupie humor of "Punky's Whips" overlaid on the amazing ensemble writing the words totally obscure.

Re: Your Most Overrated Bands
True but the REAL issue with Zappa is the blatant overuse of xylophone.

I think he could have used more xylophone.
Yeah I agree on the lyrics thing, there are plenty of songs I just can't listen to because they're too puerile. But I'm a big fan of most of the music and I definitely don't think he's overrated.

I saw an old coworker post a pic of himself on instagram in front of the dischord house with a freshly shaved head and realized holy shit this is just civil war reenactment for millenials.

First Six Sabbath albums are unassailable. Let's not get this fundamental fact of the universe wrong.
