Obviously this depends on your definition of "straighforward." Are you suggesting that bands that only use three or four chords are, by definition, straightforward? Because I don't think Jeff Mangum knew a chord beyond A-Am-B-C-D-Dm-E-Em-F, but there was nothing straightforward about Neutral Milk Hotel... it's deceptively simple music. A veneer of simple, underneath which there's a lot more, depending on how deep you wanna delve...

I just may not have read much more into their music beyond face value. Their big hits were simple and catchy, and even some of the non-singles were pretty simple.

"I think I smell a Rat.
Walking down the street
Carrying a baseball bat
Ooh I think I smell a Rat."

Blue Orchid is a Death from Above 1979 song. Seven Nation Army is one riff from start to finish. I dunno. I'm not saying they're bad at all. I just don't believe there's much more under the surface. I prefer The Dead Weather anyways.

Well, I feel you on those specific examples.

I never really liked "Seven Nation Army," but if I'm honest I think it's because I was a fan from De Stijl on, and "Army" was the first song the plebs got their hands on. I was 16 and that band was sort of a badge of protection against the wastoids. It felt like cultural appropriation. My wife told me she pretends no one else has ever heard Deja Entendu but her because it's too personal for her to imagine other people having opinions of it, make of that what you will. Snobby people, I know

ANYWAY...

I really think De Stijl and White Blood Cells were the best but they're all great IMO, with the exception of Get Behind Me Satan which is pretty meh, overall.

Screwdriver is a great song, but yeah, I also think the White Stripes are greatly overrated and everything Jack White has done outside of that duo is more interesting and entertaining

Jesus H. Christ, this SLAYS.

Right in the first song when they just keep bludgeoning you with that same chord.

It's like... European Gregorian Dopesmoker or something.

Thanks for this :thumb:

Imean WERE HERE TO SMOKE CIGS AND DRINK SHITTY BEER AND PLAY LOUD. DONT BE SUCH A BITCH ABOUT IT.
It's just That's Entertainment by The Jam, but like with that mid 90s Oasis white noise distortion smear instead of the acoustic guitars. Other band sounded like a Japanese Stereophonics cover band playing The Bartender & The Thief after hearing it once. Fucking hell, sorry man. :idk:

I have got to say, I liked the new Titus Andronicus when it came out, and now I fucking love it.
It's a massive undertaking. At 29 songs over 90 minutes, it's impossible to digest in one sitting.
But after repeated listens... which it totally warrants... it becomes readily apparent that it is great.
All of their albums are great, but this one might be the best one of the four.
I really can't recommend it highly enough; one of the best American indie rock and roll records of 2010s so far.

This sucker right here
