We used to have a 1 year mandatory military service when you are done with high school, for males(age 18-20).
It used to be really strict, and 20-30 years ago you had to be questioned by the police if you refused, to state your reason for not wanting to be in the army.
If you where a pacifist, which was my reason, you had to answer all these ridiculous question to prove you really where a pacifist.
And then you could have what they called the "civil service", and then you might work at a school, church, be an assistant to a person with a handicap, etc.
But if you did not have a accepted reason and just didn't want to be in the army, you would probably go to jail. Don't know for how long.
But when it was my turn, in 2007, I just told them I was a pacifist and was not interested in killing-training and wanted to do the civil service.
So they just gave me a piece of paper I had to fill out and when I finished school 8 months later I did one year of civil service.
Worked at the local music and drama school and had a blast.
But by that time I could also just have said "I have smoked weed" and they let you go. Most of my friends did that. But I wanted to spend that year working at the music school.
Now they don't have the civil service anymore, so I think if you don't want to be in the army you don't have to.
Thanks for posting. Those things seem like pretty neat little toys. I checked out the website and started following him on Instagram. Nothing I would be interested in right now as they are pretty basic, but I am glad to see people thinking outside the box.
