Same. I think the best part about distortion boxes vs fuzz or overdrive is the ability to make them sound filtered and dramatically different than the EQ of your input signal.

For sure! There are some interesting sounds to be achieved no doubt.

I started with everything on the boneshaker at noon for a base tone of sorts...decided to roll off all the eq controls, and then one at a time test the sweep of each knob. The eq level controls will distort that frequency (this is key) at higher ends of the sweep, which makes a throaty filtered tone, with the ability to still adjust the freq itself :thumb:

Someone mentioned Sonic Youth tones in another thread. I know it's meant for low tuned instruments but I'm imagining I can get some nasty harsh tones out of it too if I want
I remember there was some buzz over you using the term "Sonic Youth tones" for a few days

These are good for bass right? I need something more overdrivey than my TAFM!

Edit: woof didn't realize I was a few pages behind.

I FIGURED OUT THE DEPTH KNOB.

So, after posting the schem I drew up in a FB group, someone mentioned the "thing that needed to be fixed" (which has been alluded to a few times, but no one really knew what it was).
Apparently, the two caps that connect to the depth knob are backwards (left one is 33n, right one is 1u). If you take them off and switch them, it makes the knob turning VERY noticeable. :joy:

I don't have any SMD parts, so I just used a couple MLCC caps I had (the little yellow drop-like ones) because the caps decided to fly away almost immediately after I removed them  .

Digitechrep already talked about that. Not backwards. Just a different kind of tone knob with them switched

I'm still all about some Sonic Youth tones. I'm going to let the bassist I'm playing with use my Boneshaker tonight. I'll let you know but I'm pretty certain it's gonna kill on bass.

Swapping the caps turns the Depth knob into another tone control. Which is completely superfluous on a pedal with a 3-band semi-parametric EQ. That is a MOD, not a fix, the stock Depth control is not broken.

p.s. this mod also (IMHO) adversely affects the distortion characteristic of the Boneshaker and also causes weird drops in gain and volume in strange places.

p.p.s. It also voids the warranty.

DTR give us some of your favorite settings! Tips! Secrets? Easter Eggs?!?

Well, I use my Boneshaker in two pretty standard (boring) ways:

1. Dirty Mid-Boost
With an already distorted amp channel, crank the level on the mids to max and turn the frequency control to ~2:00-3:00. Then adjust the Overall Distortion control to fit in with your base distorted tone. This gives you a nice mid-boost for solos. Works great in a Power Trio format where more volume isn't necessary, just differentiation.

2. Post-Fuzz EQ
This is my main use of the Boneshaker. The Carcosa Fuzz has some amazing sounds when you crank AFTER and crank the Hi-Cut, unfortunately these extreme settings are also pretty ear-piercing. So I use the Boneshaker after the Carcosa to roll-off those highs. I get the weirdness without the pain.

I was able to make my Elements do ring mod shit, so I need to mess with this more and see what I can come up with. I also got my comp to sound like full on fuzz. Lol.

Right now, I'm using very similar to how you are though but pre fuzz.

Damn it, I need another Boneshaker to keep at home off my board for active experimentation purposes... the $40 sale is probably long-over, huh?

Yeah I may have to reconsider letting my bass player use it. I feel like the practicality/potential for weirdness is too good. Wish I had thought to get two of them.

I don't think I own anything that I haven't voided the warranty on.
