I quite like my Echo Dream 2, unfortunately I don't think it stacks up to the might of the Echo Degrader at all so I still think I'll sell it. Sort of a bummer, but it is a nice pedal.

hey senseis I have a bunch of questions..

to you bass players; do you prefer 15" or 10"? combination of both? been thinking about it and I don't see many people rocking 15"s..

what kind of OD/distortion do you use with your bass? mine seems pretty picky.. I get rad tones with most of my stuff, but it kind of gets farty or changes the character a whole lot.. beginning to realize why those sans amp pedals are so popular. I also want to try a mini, does it dramatically change the character of the bass?

one more... how do I use midi with my computer? MIDI to USB cable like this?

I use a 15", but really that depends on the rest of your set up. For OD/Distortion look into stuff with clean blends, that always brings back the bassier qualities.

Mini is the best choice for bass. I've used it through 4-5 different amps, tube and solid state, with a few different basses, a bass vi, baritone, and guitar and it is awesome with all of them. And it's pretty transparent with the bias higher. When its lower, it gets some nasty Lo Fi tones which I know you are a fan of.

2x15 rumbles the guts.
4x10 is punchy as fuck.
My favorite is 115+210. Best of both worlds.

That might work for midi...but it kind of depends on your software more these days. Also, if your device is powered via midi or requires any power via midi, that is something to look into (beatstep does not send enough power to things sometimes...wouldn't think that would be a problem with that though).

There is always the tried-and-true midi sports that are cheap.

Reaper will be helpful (if you have a mac...that is another thing, it depends on your platform and what you want to do...they all have different methods of routing and abilities).

You'd think that midi would have become easier to use over the years, but they have kind of gone the opposite way in my opinion with all these midi over usb devices and streamlined interfaces (though, I am sure I am wrong in most eyes...).

Not an expert, just went through the same thing for the third time (in three different eras) haha.

It all just depends on what you want to do...I have found reaper to be the cheapest with the best features for midi so far. Abelton sucks unless you drop cash (and, even then the interface sucks). Well, the interface on reaper sucks too.

I enjoy a nice 215 cab. The key is to get good quality speakers and have a cabinet made for them.

thanks for the input, buddies. for what it's worth: I'm using a vm jag bass through an ampeg v4 into a 2x15 loaded with jensen 75s. it's fucking crushing and definitely rumbles the guts. I'm going to try out a mini before the sansamp pedal and test the cab with a 4x10 as well

@galvar, I want to use my microbrute through audiomulch. I'd like to trigger some VSTs with it. I hope it's as simple as getting that midi to usb chord and setting it up through am

Shouldn't be a problem...I was mostly trying to get the dang DAW to send messages on a channel other than 1...

Wait, on second thought...the microbrute doesn't have a real midi out does it? Yea, you are getting into midi-usb territory....but, you should be able to just use it with a USB cable? http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb14/a ... obrute.htm
SOS wrote:Alongside these, you'll find a conventional five-pin MIDI input and a bi-directional MIDI/USB port that allows you to use the MicroBrute as a tiny remote keyboard. Remarkably, it's both polyphonic and velocity-sensitive when used in this fashion, and also sends pitch-bend, mod wheel, and octave information.
So, yea, you gotta use the midi-usb thing. Which with the beatstep, that was actually fairly easy (as I remember).

Dang beatstep ain't working with anything though...it's like it need a dang DAW just to do it's job...it worked well with a computer just not at all what I need it for haha.

Going to sell my beatstep...

I tend to prefer 12"s and 15"s over 10's, but I don't think it matters too much, as long as the speakers and cab are of good quality. I tend to think of 10s as sounding more "focused" or like tigher but I don't really have any rational to it outside of personal experiences.

my fave i've tried is the Fuck OD. one thing I would recommend trying is experimenting with pickup height, if it's too close to your strings it will likely be giving too much output to your pedals and will sound kinda farty. if they are too far your dirt will sound weak.

thanks for the advice! the pick up height thing makes a lot of sense.. going to adjust that. a proper set up would be nice, too. I think the perceived fartyness was just because I wasn't used to it or didn't quite understand what the fuzzies would do to the bass vs guitar. jammed some drum and bass with a friend the other day and am really loving this thing with all my dirt now  divine hammer/dirty doper/holy mountain/two headed werewolf fuzz all sound righteous with bass.. all I want to do is play bass now !!! going to be on the look out for a mini/fuck. would also like to try a compressor.

I'm trying to get down with finger playing, but I sound like poo when I try to match blast beats

lol yeah playing fingers fast takes a ton of time to develop, I usually just go for a pick if I'm going to be playing lots of fast notes over and over.

also dirt pedals in general sound way more sick with bass, esp the ones that like single notes at a time. have fun dude :omg:

Edit:

should I get a Raptio or a Mini Judder v2?
