I dunno, as a lean playback phrase sampler it does the trick just fine. You do need to front load all of the sample work, as it just plays back files. If you're looking to manipulate stuff on the fly, the MPX8 is not going to be a good fit - but as a compact bank of drone oscillators or one shot chunk playback machine feeding a sea of pedals it can be handy.

Does the digitakt have velocity sensitive pads? (I have no idea if this is of any importance to me -- at all) if its more sensible than the sp404 i might look out for one. Saw a mk1 that had gone cheaply recently. Is the midi good? Like can you play a sample chromatically in all octaves unlike the roland? That is the main thing that bugs me about the 404.

I do use renoise now and i like the mangling possible. i used ableton live before but i dont like the pricy even if their sampler is good. I think i just dont like daws, i think i rather just would like a well featured audio editor to do convoluted things in though you cant do much in terms of layering in those. Most importantly, computers are stupid and hardware lacks access to youtube.

The S2000 is the fucking worst. hope someone will take mine someday. it may even be worth money cause it has the cards and memory. i wish there was more to like about akais than the stretch and the vast creativity of the people who made all the sample cds for them

pads on the digitakt aren't velocity sensitive they're just on/off. So adding the velocity to each note is easy if you're sequencing but can't really do it if you're just playing live except by riding the volume knob I guess. I can't remember the exact range you can re-pitch samples to, it is fully chromatic for whatever the range is but it is limited, to maybe something like a 4 octave span?

The 8 output card is probably worth more without being wrapped up in the sampler, though the vintage price creep is starting to hit even these, so YMMV. I don't regret coughing up the $45 to land mine, though I think my long term plan is to just set it up with some interesting waveforms and then treat it like a rompler.

Yeah i think getting some SCSI thing just to load cool sounds into it is the way to go. Still, that is enough of drag to me. Either you would have to have a library of cool Cd-roms or some old PC setup with some audio editor that still supports SCSI loading to get milage. My head already hurts. It just reeks of sidecar.

Ok but it still supports it via midi? I'm not wholly opposed to pairing something with a shitty midi keyboard to get full functinallyty as long as it can be played without one. 4 octaves is good as long as it is 4 playable octaves and i can pitch down stuff to shit still with bitcrushy goodness

Yeah, there is absolutely a component of self abuse tied to using old samplers for the entire process. I'm here for it. Planning on getting one of these once my music budget loosens up a bit, it's like something bad has happened to the economy.

They also sell a wifi compatible one, if someone can span the gap between some old Akai sampler editing application and some new wifi hijinks - might be too confuser heavy for my calcified neurons though. I guess at the same price it's worth considering, though I'd hate to have my sampler hacked over wifi - that's some stupidest timeline shit right there.

No reason to believe it wouldn't let you do that with MIDI but I don't know tbh you'd have to watch a video or read the manual. It definitely accepts MIDI in, I just never tried it so IDK.

As I understand it, MIDI data transfer of samples takes AGES.

I meant the playing with keyboard not the other stuff. Didn't even know MIDI file transfer was possible!

Oh, that makes much more sense. Yeah, some stuff can take sound file data dumps over MIDI. We don't generally speak of it because it's re-enacting a really low point from a dark era of growing pains in the technology.
