Just got the other 2 tubes in for my 1960. I know that 2x the power only equals 3 dB louder, but damn, it really seems a lot louder now. Fuck, I don't want to have to buy an attenuator.

Normally I would agree with you, but we've been on a quest lately to make our stage sound more quiet, and let our PA really drive everything. Unfortunately, we have a fuckload of multi-part vocals and need to be able to hear our monitors. And IEMs look weird.

Yeah. And the thing is, the 1960 sounded fucking awesome, distorting at the perfect volume with the volume knob at 3, when it was missing 2 tubes. I really wonder how much damage I could do by pulling the 2 new tubes out and just running it that way.

It's probably easier on a (non-cathode biased) amp to run with 2 output tubes instead of all four.

So I was just going to bump this thread to keep it going, when I realized that my updates on using the 1960 with my covers band got wiped out, so here are my thoughts:

I've played it for 3 rehearsals now. I'm using a Carvin 4x10, and I'm also mic'ing it and sending it through our PA and subwoofer.

At this point, I absolutely love the tone. When all tone controls are set flat, it is very mid-heavy and cuts through the band mix like a knife. Crank the bass up a couple spots and it has an impressive amount of low-end. It goes much bassier than I like it personally (I'm more of a grindy/middy guy).

I've found that it is very clean at low volumes. To get any real dirt out of it, you need to crank it up quite loud. Since I mainly got it to have a slightly dirty tone, this is a bit of an issue for me. My band likes to keep it pretty quiet on stage and let the PA do the hard work, so I'm probably going to have end up getting a power soak to bring the output volume down.

For now, I pulled out the middle two tubes and then flipped the impedence down to 4 ohm (my cab is 8 ohm). In this configuration, it gives me exactly what I wanted. With the volume at about 3, it is sort-of clean when I play softly, and dirties up great when I really dig in.

Bottom line, it is exactly the tone I was looking for in a tube amp, except just a bit too loud at full power. I'll run it at half-power until I decide whether to get a power soak or not. I'm not overly worried about the amp torpedo'ing because I know a lot of guitarists do the same thing pulling tubes, and very few of them have issues. Also, it's not like this amp cost a fortune, either.

verrrrrrrrrry cool.

i just got some time in on the Swell that Deltz and Sousie rave about. i kinda..... hated it. couldn't get any sound out of it that didn't feel like i was fighting for some clarity. when i used the dooder at my practices spots toob head i could FEEL some extra thump in my chest, but the same thing was going on. way different responses to how i like to play and i didna really like it. also, i found i just had the output turned way too low on my Rusty. turned it up to half and i'm getting punched in the chest AND colon with my rig now.

i think...... that toobs are something i'd have to spend a LOT of time to figure them out in a way that i'm comfy with. might just be something i leave to my Ampy Betters.

so good that your rigs doing what you want it to. LOVE getting along with new gear.
