Yeah, even Carr amps are a bit of a mess to look at—not that tidiness is the most important thing.Ancient Astronaught wrote:As much as this idea is kinda anti-Dunwich-mentality if you ever wanted to turn it into a serious business this would probably be your bread and butter. If Orange can sell their rip offs for $2500 and you could build better ones and sell them for $1500 you could put a major hurt on them. I would also be the first in-line to become an employeenew05002 wrote:Maybe I should make PCB DA120s to satisfy all your needs![]()
Verellen does PtP on full custom builds as well, the 45w Class A amp I sold to skully is PtP (if I remember the pis correctly) and his Spaldo might be as well. If its a low parts count build (like those two amps that only have Vol / tone controls) I can see PtP being worth it, but IMO it makes the guts look like a rats nest pretty much no matter what you do. Nick's turret builds look a thousand times cleaner and easier to work on than ANY PtP build I've seen.AngryGoldfish wrote:Matamp taught me this years when I visited the factory. The lead designer was showing me the workshop and stuff, and I asked about the wiring. He demonstrated some of it, and I said is that PTP. He quite firmly replied no and explained how frustrating it is to see 'bootweek' builders claming PTP when it's either turret board, eyelet board or something else. He showed me an example of a 'true' point-to-point' amp and then explained the differences.
There are only a few major builders using strict PTP wiring. One of the reasons why Matchless and Carr are so expensive is because they employ that technique a lot. I think Carr also operate using other techniques, but Matchless almost entirely use it. I think Bad Cat used to build with PTP wiring as well, I can't remember. I don't think they do any more, if they did. Either way, I don't think it makes much of a difference
Yes but you could make a modular system where you can pick the preamp section, the PI section and the power amp section you want. I know its almost unfathomable to go full PCB but if you were trying to break into a national market it would be the easiest way to do it.new05002 wrote:Part of me says that is not a bad idea but unless I went full pcb it would still be a lot of work. I would only make the power supply and main board easier.
but full PCB....
Like nick said that does look like a pain to work on, but thats definitely not the worst looking PtP I've seen. The inside of some of the Model T's i've seen are treacherous.AngryGoldfish wrote:Yeah, even Carr amps are a bit of a mess to look at—not that tidiness is the most important thing.
But then again, PTP can be incredibly tidy (not a guitar amp):
You could design and market pot harness that just slide on to the pot and are three wires then have a socket on the other end to plug it into.new05002 wrote:PCB mount pots and sockets are like blasphemy thats all
but a pcb main board would cut down some time for sure
How much reverb do you want? I love my Eventide Space, but if you're not a full-on ambience freak it might be a bit much (complexity, size, and price-wise). I generally hear good things about the Supernatural, the Supermoon, and the HoF.doctorpoopenstein420 wrote:I'm know it's been covered, but any solid reverb suggestions? Subdecay Spring Theory, Malekko Spring Chicken, Red Panda Context, Boss RV-3, Eventide Space/H9, Strymon Flint or BigSky, Blackout Effectors Cadavernous, Digitech RV-7, Dr. Scientist Mini-Reverberator, EQD Dispatch Master, EHX Holy Grail, Mr. Black Eterna/Supermoon/Deluxe Plus, TC Electronic Hall of Fame, all reverbs I would use/trust/am using.doctorpoopenstein420 wrote:I'm know it's been covered, but any solid reverb suggestions? Hall of Fame, you have multiple reverbs and a toneprint you could make into either one of those verbs if one of the preset types is incapable of doing it.doctorpoopenstein420 wrote:celticelk wrote:How much reverb do you want? I suppose something fairly simple, something subtle that i could use always on, but the capability for real fucking spacey ambient shit every now and then would be lovely. Definitely looking for something relatively inexpensive.
