I dug that Tomeka Reid album! I've saw her playing with Jaimie Branch once, but not (yet) doing her own stuff.

Caught Nate Wooley's Columbia Icefield last night, with Susan Alcorn, Ava Mendoza & Ryan Sawyer (which is a ridiculously solid combo!) Grabbed audio but not video, haven't had a chance yet to see how it came out.

That was a preview of sorts for TONE, the local festival that brings folks in that are too cool/advanced for the local corporate jazz festival. The big name for TONE coming up is Braxton & Wolf Eyes, we'll see if I can get to that!

I had a big round-number birthday back at the end of April, which was something I saw coming and planned ahead for. (Sometimes you just have to throw the party you want to be at!)

Anyway, rented the big hall at my fave spot and got some musicians I love to come and play. Had a pretty sweet night!

Eucalytus got the dancefloor going! Triple drummer action!

Solo explorations on sax + guitar from Colin Fisher!

The excellent singer-songwriter Isla Craig also played, bringing a rockin' band with some musicians from the same scenes as the above, but it's formally outside the bounds of this thread, so I'll spoiler it here:

Nothing we post is outside the bounds of this thread. ;) (thread title is meant to be tongue-in-cheek)

I may have posted something from Josh Cole's Kind Mind here in the past. Compositions for vibes, sax and double bass. This time out with Ted Crosby in the sax chair, and he brought something different with the effects running on his horn — including some very nice work with Randy's Revenge:

I don't normally post stuff I performed in on this thread, but this one maybe qualifies? Call it atmospheric/cinematic improvisations, at any rate. This started out as a one-off trio and we did a show like that, but with my friend Marilyn on board, holding down the sonic centre with their trumpet, this really feels like a band, so we picked a name and are hoping to do more. I present: Nobody Waved Goodbye!

I also don't normally pass on links from my blog here, but I mentioned upthread that I got a decent audio capture of Nate Wooley's local show with Susan Alcorn, Ava Mendoza, and Ryan Sawyer and everyone really oughtta check that out: https://mechanicalforestsound.blogspot. ... field.html

(And if you're clicking on that, you also really oughtta dig the opening set from that show, with the local heroes in the Rob Clutton Trio (RC, double bass; Karen Ng, sax; Nick Fraser, drums) joined by pedal steel master Kurt Newman: https://mechanicalforestsound.blogspot. ... -kurt.html)

Chris Corsano has surprised me every time I've seen him play, so maybe it shouldn't surprise me that this solo effort sounds something like The Ex covering the Peter Gunn theme.

Roundup of recent-ish stuff, part 1!

Aline's Étoile Magique
They had some unexpectedly great sound at this outdoor stage at the local corporate jazz fest. The festival doesn't book much adventurous stuff, but they do manage to draw some light toward cool local musicians on occasion. This unit is headed by violinist Aline Homzy, with backing from aces Michael Davidson (vibes) + Thom Gill (guitar). Good original compositions, plus they investigate composers like Charlie Parker and Fats Waller.

BLOOP
I've probably posted this duo here before? Lina Allemano's trumpet spacialized and otherwise reorganized by Mike Smith's effects.

Non-Twins

A one-off put together by John Oswald, the original idea was to have two saxophonists and two double bassists, but sickness kept one of the latter away. It does feature visiting bassist Christopher A. Williams, who had a really unique approach to the instrument, playing it more like a cello or gamba.

The very same! Less well known than his other strands, but he's a longtime sax-skronker, often with the legendary CCMC.
