Sonny Sharrock was damn heavy, and got crazy free. One of the few jazzer's I've enjoyed.

He might like Kayo Dot, Eagle Twin... I'm not sure where the best place to be to ease him into the heavy (or into the right frame of mind to enjoy the simplicity nay... stupidity of a monstrous riff if he's in a high minded jazz mindset though). I gotta say, nearly everyone I've played Electric Wizard to has enjoyed it.

You could show him some math rock stuff. Like Tera melos, te, toe, piglet, dakota/dakota and stuff like that. It is on the lighter side but will lead towards heavier stuff. Dakota/Dakota were two of the guys from Russian circles before that band.

There are also some more modern jazzy type rock you could show him like mouse on the keys or jizue. Japanese bands.

And also the more metal type bands like cynic that have the jazzy elements.

Russian Circles sounds like a good start for jazzbro, I'd give him some later Earth too.

For starters, Ax, if that's your view of contemporary jazz, you need to get out of the jazz-at-Lincoln-Center circles and see what's happening on the fringes. As with metal, the spectrum is a lot broader than what is visible to those having a casual look from the outside.

As for your cousin, I *should* be a good resource for this question, but having been into metal longer than I've been into jazz, it's hard to predict what will appeal to someone coming at it from the outside. Sonny Sharrock is one of my heroes, and his *Ask the Ages* is remarkably doomy in places, so I'd definitely put that on the list. Instrumental post-metal also seems like a good entry point: Russian Circles, Pelican, etc. I think that Samothrace and Usnea are melodically and rhythmically interesting enough in their own ways to appeal to a jazz listener, if they can get past the vocals. Definitely later Earth. I'll think about it and maybe add some more later.

It's one of those Marshall JTM1's. I've seen that he's been using them a lot with drcarlsonalbion.

Goes like this: First time I saw Earth (right after HEX), they played through Pelican's amps, which at the time was huge full stacks.
The second time I saw them was in between Angels, I think. He was playing through some sort of Fender combo amp.
Now he's down to 1w Marshall JTM1's

Right on! Dude makes records sound super good. When you say demoed, you mean there wil be clips?

Thanks dude. I'm not sure I'm qualified for that title, but I'll come up with a hot list once this assignment's knocked out.
The big problem is that I'm not sure if "jazzer" means lots of modal stuff or lots of changes or lots of __________.

I like the Russian Circles, and second that, but I think I'd go more for, like, later Isis (Absence) or some Mid-era Neurosis (Silver in Blood, etc.) because the compositions tend to be a little more interesting.

If he knows anything about jazz, he should be able to pick out all the jazzy bits in Iommi's playing.
