Yea, you've got some motion and life in it which makes it for me. We saw Slowdive and Ride recently. We left during both because it just got too slow and boring. Maybe it's cause I don't smoke pot? I actually think some of the better shoegazy stuff comes off of ILF. haha.
Cheers man.

God damn this thread is crazy haha. The style of casecandy's posts are the exact reason I stopped posting on AP; y'all fight tooth and nail (no pun intended) on everything
Although I do know AP has had their site crashed when Brand New news hit their site, and they get hundreds of thousands of page visits for any updates on Brand New too. users there are all really fucking serious about the genres casecandy mentioned.

After browsing, I feel like you need to have had an AOL Instant Messenger account name with at least seven X's of varying capitalization to post on that site.

Okay I have calmed down so so much since I last posted a few hours ago. Sorry if I flamed anybody! I respect you guys so, so much. We just like really different music. D.o.S., would it help if I admit you are right about Refused? Here I was thinking they just became capitalist pigs and they were ALWAYS capitalist pigs! All along! UGH

All of this is very accurate. Emo is a genre and a scene based around fighting about shit! LOL. We really give a fuck over there. And we are deathly serious about our Brand New. I just checked my personalized feed and there were 11 articles on Brand New alone before I had to look at Page 2. One of the articles was about them posting something to Instagram. I kid you not. 40 replies. Every show is bootlegged so we get the new songs as they play them live... by the time the album comes out we will already know every lyric, my hand to God. It is an absolute obsession LOL... they've been my favourite band since I was 18 and I've never once felt like "Huh, I should cool it with Brand New, I guess"

Once I drove eight hours in December to see them and they only played four songs from
Deja and then played the whole
D&G album... ugh

While facetious... this is not entirely inaccurate! LOL. I remember trading Say Anything demos and b-sides via AOL circa 2005... good times. My username on Genius is xWHALESHARQx.

I SWEAR TO GOD.
If one more person says they either skipped or left half way through the set of a band I would kill to see!
LIKE THEY ARE LITERALLY CALLED SLOWDIVE WHAT DID YOU EXPECT

What? Dude, don't apologize for flaming. We love you. Just talking about life and selling out (and the history of punk rock) over the internet.

casecandy, yea, nobody is mad. It was just a good discussion and I wanted to type (as a form of procrastination). No more generalizations! Me included, haha.
Wordpress! Come on, you know that all wordpress does is collect data for profit. They sell your intellectual property! Corporate exploitation. (I'm kidding, wordpress is fine).
I tried releasing stuff on minidisc once. I stilll have the copies somewhere, haha. I always hated it when bands here in California released full albums (like their official album) as a crappy playschool tape recording on a cd-r with little, irregular scraps of paper as their "album". I am fine with demos being like that but if you actually care about your band, save some money, get some cds printed (it's just as cheap as buying cd-rs), and use a damn straightedge when cutting the cover. DIY in some places in California means "let me find a dude or way to do it for me for free". Some of these people criticize other bands for using a particular pressing plant or something (or even the fact that they "put money into the system").
Genres are kinda silly. They serve a purpose (easier to say "I'm going to a punk show" instead of "I'm going to see five bands across the spectrum of independent music that will feature sounds based on Napalm Death, Discharge, Buzzcocks, and Screeching Weasel"). Getting too caught up in it gets kinda funny when people make up genres to explain something. I remember my friend kept saying he liked Borknagar because they are "Forest Metal". Which I guess is a thing; not sure if Borknagar is in there. But it gets a little specific. I had never heard of the term "anarcho punk" until I started reading works like Glasper's book (why wern't the Poison Girls in there?). Crass was just a punk band on the same level as Black Flag (in terms of genre/classification) when I was a kid. I don't know. haha.

Me too, on Consequence of Sound.
The article was about how metal is more popular than pop now on Spotify!
The inverted cross and blank-sclera-eyes thing is kindof an Odd Future thing, though

I've never heard a single Brand New track, where should I begin?

Not to like them or not, but to get some context tot he obsession.

Most people would say get the album
The Devil & God Are Raging Inside Of Me (2006). It's big, guitar rock, straight up. By far their most popular and critically praised album. They recorded an earlier version of it, for which the demos are still fan favourites and played live, but everything was lost in Hurricane Katrina, so they re-recorded it very quickly, and it has a very cohesive feel as a result. This album took the quiet-loud dynamic that Nirvana and The Pixies invented, and took it to absolute extremes. A few songs have whispered parts leading into enormous riffs, for example. This album was meant to be performed live, that's for sure.

Me? I like their older, poppier, emo-ier stuff better. To me and to a lot of their fans,
Deja Entendu (2003) is their best album. That's French for "Already heard," which is a sly comment on the unoriginality of most po-punk, I suppose. This album has extremely dark, depressing lyrics. "Me vs. Madonna vs. Elvis" is about lying to a girl to get her into bed and it's heartbreaking. "Sic Transit" is about the song's teenage protagonist being essentially raped by an older, more experienced lover (and has one of the best bass lines in rock music, to my ears). "Guernica" uses Picasso's painting of a bombing as a metaphor for the internal struggle upon learning a loved one is dying. And so on. The vocal delivery is essentially loose rap in a lot of places, very influenced by hip-hop and poetry. I dig it! P.S. Great track sequencing on this one, the songs just melt into each other in a lot of places.

Context: this band is one of the bigger bands in the Long Island scene, which is basically a suburban hardcore scene with a lot of pop-punk influence, circa early 2000s. Their contemporaries were Glassjaw (heavier) and Taking Back Sunday (poppier) as well as Crime In Stereo, Straylight Run, The Movielife, etc. Most of these bands are kinda/sorta still around but none of them had the staying power. Glassjaw are as popular, but don't release new music; TBS are awful, now. They released one good album in 2001 and it has carried them through to today. Recent stuff is drek.
