going by the name of the tread.. I don't understand when someone wants to get gear when they don't know what they want to use it for or have a reason other than "SHINY" for me gas comes from getting a musical idea first and needing to find a way to do whatever I need or think I need

Sometimes getting a shiny new fun thing can inspire musical ideas. There are sounds you can make with the right pedal that you wouldn't have thought of on your own. That's the beauty of an awesome pedal.

in the end it's in you or not, a awesome pedal is nice but you should be able to pull off your thing with the cheapest POS at hand, then you really appreciate the ease you get with better gear.

It's about asking What if with a curious mind and embracing an explorer's spirit of adventure.Blackened Soul wrote:going by the name of the tread.. Most recently, when asking myself this question, the Mountainking Anunnaki Transmitter was my answer.
I don't know where exactly that fits into musical ideas. I also don't fully understand what it does. But I know special, and this thing's got it. How exciting

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
I rarely if ever have that. I have the musical imagination of a slice of bread. I need an instrument and preferably other people playing to get the juice flowing. I don't sit and think "this note would be nice" or "this sound". I sit and play and whatever comes out when I do might be boring or inspiring. So I might either stop or continue. Some times a pedal might help me find something in the interesting register more easily. The excitement that comes along with the new, shiny toy will also help to simply pick up the instrument and play more in the times of lacking inspiration.Blackened Soul wrote:going by the name of the tread.. The dicks at /r/guitarpedals are slagging off this.
Not every Reverb pedal needs to sound like you're in a band trying to sound Shoegaze. Coming from someone that overuses Reverb in his bedroom - you can't honestly say that using that much reverb is practical in a band environment
EDIT:
Decided to get my Elements and Strymon Brigadier etched. Looking forward to it.

which there might be a-plenty of, hopefully...
But yeah, Roto = greatness
also after chatting with Greg Burns after Marriages played here, I know EXACTLY what synth to buy for live droning and occasional arpeggio or something. For anyone interested - Greg plays Novation Ultranova (you could easily substitute a Mininova)

For those who have had both: compare and contrast requested between the Mini and Driving Notion.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
They're completely different, the Mini is nice and I liked it with the gain up and the bias low but I don't know any other pedal that compares to the Driving Notion, it's an overdrive but at the same time it's quite fuzzy and gated with weird artefacts and the clang is a bit like the clang of an aluminum neck but even better in my opinion.
good deals with: the_brow, phantasmagorovich, alexsga, DarkAxel, goroth, The Wood Wizard, Tendollarcat, vbps, monkeydancer, intothegroove, Brobee

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
Does anyone else struggle with that feeling like they should get rid of all their "neat and GAS worthy but more common pedals" for just a few peices of classic, unique gear?
Like I guess I am struggling with selling stuff like Possessed, MicroBrute, Volca and such so that I can get the few peices I have always dreamed of (eventually a mosrite guitar and sunn amp)? If I could stop buying a ton of small pieces and just be patient toward one final piece, I might be better off?
I guess what would you choose: a Mosrite Mark I, Sunn Model T, one fuzz pedal, and an oil can delay or a ton of random and neat equipment (everything from a sovtek head, a few synths, a few drone machines, a bunch of seppuku/masf/infanem, and other random stuff)? Thinking about doing crazy stuff...haha

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
All the time. I spent nearly 3 years trading in/trading up guitar rigs while trying to feel out my preferences. Eventually most everything that remains is *keeper* gear. And then it's a real struggle to part with your preciouses. Gotta prioritize and do what's practical, first & foremost.lordgalvar wrote:Does anyone else struggle with that feeling like they should get rid of all their "neat and GAS worthy but more common pedals" for just a few peices of classic, unique gear?

3 weeks after getting what has been a dream amp (Selmer TNB 50mk2) I sold GAS-worthy rarities that were shelved due to the difference in voicing; a Spaceman Gemini III wound up paying for almost half the amp. I had been putting cart before horse with the prevailing attitude of clean MV American platform when it turns out I prefer dirty non-master British platform.
Another month passed and I sold a LFLJ to get an Effectrode Blackbird, to try marrying the American clean/drive tones with the British amp before exploring another dozen dirt pedals. 8 months later the Blackbird became vintage Muffs: a v4 and my beloved "reverse" v6 which wound up being the one. Skip another 8ish months and the v4 sold to replace the LFLJ with a custom painted version, for a rare bargain
I miss the v4 Muff...and other rare/special stuff I've passed along to get other rare/special stuff. BJFE and Castledine, D*A*M and so on. Limited resources mean compromise, so what remains are the real #1s with as minimal overlap as possible. Had to trade a v7 Muff and a Telenordia filter to score a hammond-box Fulltone Vibe which is now my primary modulation. 2 pedals that were spending too much time in storage became something I use regularly. Big ticket and rare items are easier justified if they become fundamental, essential and all that. Like owning 3 vintage DMMs
When something has the sound there's going to be struggle involved.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
I actually think in the other direction some times. I have a feeling that it would be more "honourable" (in lack of a better word) to achieve great sound with run-of-the-mill gear. To me it would mean that I've transcended GAS if I'd just play Strat - 4-5 Boss or EHX pedals - Marshall.lordgalvar wrote:Does anyone else struggle with that feeling like they should get rid of all their "neat and GAS worthy but more common pedals" for just a few peices of classic, unique gear?

But then again I love the sound of my Amps (Roost Session Master 100 and Selmer T&B 50) and my Bastin guitar. I also love my second guitar, a Squier Duosonic with upgraded Pickups. Most of the pedals on my board are uncontested and I have some snobbishly expensive or rare stuff on there. I keep some stuff around "in case I ever need some Doom sounds" or silly reasons like that. But really I've grown happy with the gear I have and most of my GAS is just curiosity to try certain stuff. I could see the Zero Point Flanger by Catalinbread shove the Wah off my board though.
