Sorry to hear that. That is the suck. I have been pretty lucky as far as cymbals go. I did manage to break three sticks tonight. Wood chips were flying everywhere! I will be happy to get rid of the rest of my Vic Firth Metal sticks. Goodbye dry Hickory, you are history! I think I will try me some Vaters. I would also consider Pro-Mark, but it seems that the sizes, and length that I enjoy are a tall order for Pro-Mark. We'll see I guess. I am at a point now where I am pretty comfortable with the new Ludwig kit. I had not played a basketed rack tom in, maybe forever. Now it seems pretty easy to get around and do fills. I suppose it doesn't hurt for it to be a big ass 14" tom. I could be blind and still hit it.
I have also been giving a new (see used) Paiste 2002 20" Wild Crash a run on the kit. I have been subbing it in place of my 2002 20" Novo China. It has a similar quick decay and is a bit on the trashier side compared to my oher 2002s. The verdict is still out, but I might just keep it as it was fairly inexpensive because I picked it up used from GC.

Re: ILOVEDRUMS... It Begins.
Anybody have any thoughts or experiences with 15" snare drums? I'm looking at trying to get a new relatively inexpensive snare drum and came across some older 15x12 snares in a few different places for relatively cheap. Thought since everything else in my kit is oversized why not get an oversized snare? I'm thinking that or just a 14x8 maple snare.

never really found much difference in them. I tune them so tight and with kevlar heads it just didn't matter what I was using.

I wouldn't go for the 15" snare myself. Partly because it might be a pain in the ass to find heads, and it is a bit awkward to play trying to get it low enough to be comfortable. They can sound alright, and of course, be loud enough. But many with marching snares crank the shit out of the tension until it sounds like a marching corps band. And maybe that's a taste thing. But to me, it begins to sound less like a snare at some point.
I have both 14x6.5" and 14x8" snares that I like quite a bit. I also have a 14x5" brass snare that sounds alright. If I had to have just one, I would happily go with a 6.5" or 8" depth snare. They have enough guts, but still say sensitive enough at lower volumes to do subtle stuff when needed. There are tons of great deals out there in the used market. How much are you looking to spend?

I have a super old 15x12 snare. People are usually surprised how normal it sounds. All other snares sound thin in comparison. Ymmv.

For sure brother. It is hard to argue with your ears. If it sounds good, it sounds good. I know they can sound good, but sometimes finding the right size head in the model you want can be a pain. On the one hand, I think you should be able to find the marching heads somewhat easily, but if you wanted something else, it might be more of a pain. Wait a min... Just checked Amazon. You can find 15" in a lot of models. So I take it back.
I just like to be prepared for unexpected events like heads breaking. I like to have a backup nearby. And the 7-11 of the music world, GC does not carry 26" bass heads. Now I am not chewing through bass heads or anything. If fact, I put the Remo Falam Slam patches on to make it fairly bullet proof. It just means that you should plan out your oh-shit arsenal a bit leaning towards the events in the future. You know.. SKYNET and all...

I would suggest that you set it up as you would play it on your kit. See if you can get it at a comfortable height and go from there.

Re: ILOVEDRUMS... It Begins.
Thanks for all the input guys! I ended up not going with the 15" idea as I finally found a 14x8 I liked at the right price.
I won this beast last night for about $150 shipped:

Here's the description from the seller:
"Up for sale is a drum I purchased last year at Fork's Drum Closet in Nashville. They explained that the drum's shell is an older (70's or 80's) maple shell that was refitted with Pearl Master's Series hardware. Also, I have upgraded the drum further with Evans heads (HD Dry batter and Snare Side 300 resonant) and Puresound brass snare wires. You can get some great sounds out of this drum!"
It's all ready got the evans heads and puresound wires I would have gotten so it was actually the cheapeast option. I was considering a Mapex MPX 14x8 for $120 but then I would have needed new heads and wires so I would have been at the same price but this one has a better shell (i like the old thinner maple shells, they have a great resonance to em) and hardware, and its Pearl so it matches my kit.

That's a good ass snare.
I did also forget to mention that I can only use one old Ludwig ball joint snare stand to get my 15x12 low enough.
One day when I build up a kit that all matches and whatnot I think I'd go 14x8 too.

Thanks man!
I've heard about those stands, apparently alot of people who use super deep snares seek them out. There's a few companies making low rise stands now a days but they price em like twice what a normal double braced stand costs.
No more jelly bean kit?

Here's some updated pics from last nights practice. New cymbals are on, took the tom mount off the bass drum, mounted the rack tom on a heavy duty stand stand (its in a much better playing position now and the cymbal arm part of it is more stable as well), installed a kickport on the bass reso head (it actually makes a difference not only in volume but in timbre as well, sooo much punch), and replaced my cheap single braced snare stand with a really nice heavy duty double braced one.

If ya haven't see it already, check out "Beware of Mr. Baker" on Netflix. Cool documentary. Pretty good drummer, more of a jazz minded drummer, and from the looks of it, a rotten human being. I would hate to be in a band with someone like him.
Every once in a while, there will actually be something cool on Netflix. I DO like that he put thought into the what he played. But it's interesting. Many drummers of our genre grew up listening to heavy music and thus, many of us are influenced by the music WE listen(ed) to. But Mr. Baker's idols were some of the great jazz drummers of the day. People like Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey and so are are drum and rhythm monsters. Some of the greats drummers of rock drew a lot of their musical inspiration from people outside the rock genre. John Henry Bonham after coming to the states was exposed to some great drummers of the day. The "Fool in the Rain" drum beat is a variation of a Bernard Purdie shuffle.
If I ever feel like I am in a rut, I just check out some drummers that are outside of what I am familiar with and see if there is anything that I can use, or something that inspires me.
It will be four weeks tomorrow since I placed the order for my new kit. Ugh... I can't imagine people waiting for one of those EGC guitars. I heard the wait for those are brutal too.
Yeah great movie. He reminds me of my grandad. He was a mean old bastard too

On another note check out Papa Joe Jones if you haven't already. Very innovative jazz drummer in his day.

That is what a simple, but solid kit should look like. Nicely done man.
I can't wait to show you guys the beginning of my new drum room project in my apartment.
construction starts in about a week!

I can attest to the power of that Kick Port. Our drummer has one and ever since he installed it, it just sounds like he's playing 2-3x louder haha

Great looking snare, and for a sweet price! Nice puresound snare wires too. Bonus! I think that was a solid find too. I think your kit looks solid and ready to rock.
