i don't think the criticism of "so it saves space from having multiple pedals" is so much a criticism as part of the purpose. supposing the cartridges sound identical to the pedal, of course.
but i do agree that the console I seems kinda not worth the money. like if you use it for the proposed clean blend = good for bass, wouldn't asking for a custom job of the bass version of the fuzz pedal you use cost roughly the same as buying the console 1 + said cartridge? maybe not in some situations, i guess but $225 for a bass version of a fuzz seems like a fairly standard (or above) price point imo. but i guess if its like where you need a different fuzz for each song in a set, and you have 3 different cartridges, that would seem more efficient/cheap than having 3 pedals on the board in addition to whatever else.

How big are the cartridges going to be? For some reason I was thinking they'd be super tiny, like one of those little memory card things, but that doesn't really make sense huh?

I'd be interested to hear how the cartridge versions sound compared to the original circuits. They may come close, but I don't think they'll sound identical.
Put that in your demo pipe and smoke it, demo dudes.

skullservant wrote:Are you planning to let builders decorate the outside of their cartridges? How would you go about doing it? I think it'd be neat to see gold cartridges like old NES stuff.
Would the proto/perf cartridges come in different sizes? I saw already that there is an adaptor for them, but could there be something like a S/M/L type proto cartridge? I think it would be a most excellent introduction for people who want to get into building to just put together a board and pop it in the socket, but being so small, especially for beginner diy builders, might prove to be rather difficult.
Anyways, I'm curious to see it come out if it does. If some handy cartridges come out, I might have to pick one up.
1) We're not going to dictate anything as far as other builders are concerned. I want to reiterate that this is an open format... more like a PC rather than a video game console. That is to say there are no standards other than you need to make sure the circuit is designed to work with the connector and pot / in and out configuration of the console.
That being said, the only design standard I'm going to push for in regards to cartridge artwork is having labels for each control on the top of the cart so people can always just look down know which knob does what. Other than that, it's up to the cartridge maker how they want it to look.

2) For now the perf board will come in one size. The current cartridges size is being delineated by what we consider to be a pretty decent size for most applications... about 2.1" x 1.8" or so. Obviously we can build them longer, but that's going to require creating another form factor for the plastic / metal housing the larger enclosures. I'm confident as we move forward we'll have a larger enclosure for the carts available as well, because you're right... not all circuits are going to translate to the smaller format, but you'd be amazed what people can do with SMD. Just look at all the Malekko pedals for instance. The carts are going to have as much space as those, if not more.

Help spread the word if you don't have cash. We only need about 30 more solid contributors and we'll be set!

Around 2.3" x 2" on the outside (the other number I quoted was internal).
Cut one of these in half length wise, and make them a little thinner and you'll have an idea of how big they are :

I haven't followed all this tread...
How this is going to work, is there a board inside the cartridge with resistor, diode, etc...
Or it's more like an emulator thing?

I suggest checking out the FAQ on the kickstarter :

Got my answer there, thanks.
So are the cartridges some kind of software model of an effect?
No. The Cartridges are just like a guitar pedal, but with out the knobs, inputs, outputs, jacks, and switches.

well if the circuit is identical it should sound identical

That's what you'd think. We shall see.

but they'll have cartridge mojo. combining pedlol mojo and vidyo gaems mojo.
if anything they'll sound better.

Digital and DSP are convenient and easier than an all analog circuit, but they don't sound better. More cost effective, yes. Better sounding, debatable, but I think not.

These are not all DSP or digital
some will be all analog circuits
