I first saw the feature length movie in a theater having only ever seen Akira before (also great, in my opinion), and it blew my head off! So over the top.

There are a couple series' and films, actually.
Just start with the first series. There's like a continuation after that and then a really bad spinoff series. The first film is basically a summary of the original series.
