Been unwinding to some Gerry Mulligan lately, so this was a nice coincidental find:

Re: Just Jazz!
Sad to hear of the passing of Michael Snow. Known abroad for his work as a visual artist, he was a key component in the introduction of free improvisation to Toronto/Canada.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIohlUYUQsE
He came up playing piano (you can see him in the background in the iconic Toronto Jazz from the NFB)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZjHV_NmY8o
As a member of the Artists' Jazz band, and then CCMC he was a key part of one of the scenes pushing against "straight" jazz, and was one of the co-founders of the Music Gallery, which is still a vital institution in the city.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz8_p09oiqg
Through plenty of changes, Snow remained a member of CCMC up to the end, playing piano and synth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUUwkXL-VgU
(To say nothing of his dabblings in fake enthomusicology and musique concrète.)
As a side note, I played a gig a few years back that Michael Snow was also playing. By virtue of seniority, he had the established privilege of playing first, so he could head home early as needed, but the musician I was playing with had another gig to get to, so we bumped him from his regular opening spot.
He was also a personal influence on one of the earliest pieces I did as a solo artist, using some samples from his film La region centrale: https://heraclitusakimbo.bandcamp.com/t ... ion-part-1

Re: Just Jazz!
I recommend this piece, which gets a bit hung up on trying to decode the Canadian-ness of New York Eye and Ear Control, but also, intriguingly, teases out its connections to New Orleans jazz.Chankgeez wrote:Hadn't heard Michael Snow passed.![]()

Re: Just Jazz!
Some live footage from a one-off quartet assembled by bassist Josh Cole. Which in fact, contains a rare double double bass alignment. Plus trumpeter Lina Allemano, back in town from Berlin, and the always-inventive Blake Howard on percussion.

Re: Just Jazz!
And another one! For fans of avant-garde pedal steel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzJawFPktgE
Aurochs are a fascinating band... in their purest state the closest thing I'd compare them to is The Necks, given their interest in longform, slowly-evolving improvisations. One of their founding members (on piano) moved out of town a few months ago, so things have been in flux lately, with the group performing regularly with rotating guest players.
* if "bands you'd compare to The Necks" is something you'd want to dig into deeper, they have good stuff on bandcamp.
