My hands are falling apaaaaaaaaaaaaaaart!
They're so dry that they're bleeding at not just the knuckles but at the fingertips and now the sides too, but lotion is so disgusting I hate using it. Liquid band-aid burns so good. Now my hands feel like they're half made of plastic.

My hands were doing that too for a while. It's pretty ridiculous when your hands burn because you're running water over them. You have to throw some lotion on them, just for a day or two

My hands got like that as well,...it would get really bad at the septum of my fingers.
It got better when I stopped working at a bakery (all that flour was sucking the moisture out of my hands).
It went away all together when I got out of foodservice.
Now it's all splinters and sawdust.

I have this problem a lot. Midwest winters + dry indoor air + germophobia handwashing = dry hands.
I hate the lotion that softens the calluses on my fretting hand. Maybe for other people (that don't play guitar) that'd be ideal, but it sure hurts when those calluses go soft and I'm pressing down against what feels like the pain nerves under the skin.
So I do this complicated hand dance where I only get lotion on the backs of my hands and knuckles. The bonus of this maneuver is that your guitar neck doesn't get all gross. Reading this all back makes me sound like a freak.

woah.
you don't have to necessarily even use lotion. olive oil is a pretty good moisturizer. but you need some kind of moisturizing substance on your skin before your hands fall off. i don't think that can actually happen, but still.
i've never had an issue with lotion softening my callouses or anything, but i don't really apply it that much. although i do wait like an hour or so after taking a bath to play bass, so i'm sure the same waiting period for applying lotion might help out. just do it before you go to sleep!

Some times I wake up in the middle of the night and go play guitar in my studio room

If you make sure you dry your hands really well after washing you can prevent it pretty well. udder cream is awesome for really chapped skin as are those intensive repair creams leave them on over night if it's real bad with clean socks on your hands. There is something else i used to use as some of those creams burn if your hands are sore but i have no idea as ive been fairly lucky lately maybe it was glycerin....
Mathias, I think I do something similar, but it makes me look like a retarded seal.
maz, I will never put something called "udder cream" on my hands. That is a shitty and disgusting name for something and I will not support it.

still waiting to hear from the job i interviewed for. and now also waiting for the septic system service dude to come and try to figure out why the sump's flooded. and i really can't afford to pay for anything more than minor repairs. i'm telling you now, die young...the farther in you get, the more things suck.
