okayso, maybe the harmonies aren't as exotic as Ellington/Strayhorn, but dag the rhyhmic invention in those horn charts (shout out Sy Oliver); the tightness of the execution; the crispness of that guitar - the recording as a whole (how the drums and bass pop out during their showcases) i took a jazz appreciation course in college and the prof was very very high on Lunceford - i believed him then and am reminded like a slap in the face every time i listen - Jimmie L's should be mentioned on the short list of top bands every time, yet he remains a relative unknown to most (not you for sure, Chank) (be back later to throw Fletcher Henderson some love too)
