that noah's ark is another nice one! wish i'd tried out more expression fun when i borrowed lg's.... the gate knob is nice for reducing/eliminating bleed, but iirc it's setting can also have a subtle effect on the timbre of the combined signal, or maybe i'm just making that part up


i'd be interested to know a little more about how the gate is set up - is it pre- or post-modulator? Is it even set up on the modulator, or does it gate the carrier?

Articles like this [ http://synthesizeracademy.com/ring-modulator/ ] are nice for refreshing my recollection of how ring mods work [spoiler: it's magick!], but they don't get into sidepools like gate implementation.

did find an interesting comment by Freppo about his Corrupter CMOS ringmod circuit that, "The signal gets recitified and then triggers a gated RC oscillator, which means that the oscillator is only running while playing. So no carrier bleedth[r]ough...." Apparently, the gate there is implemented with a simple envelope detector. He also comments: "Another gate on the cd4070 could be used for full modulation of the pulse width of the carrier signal...."

I just got a Pladask Feber, so I’m back in the Ring Mod game. I think it is actually forcing me to learn something about my instrument (guitar), so that’s a definite plus and not something any other pedals have really done for me recently. I’m wondering if anyone using a ring mod with guitar has explored alternate tunings that make for more harmonic/melodic playing?

Oh, I also put the Feber in the effect loop of the DOD Rubberneck delay last night, and that was generating some cool results. Depending on where I set the bandwidth control on the Feber, I was getting some cool descending/ascending repeat trails. Def a deep pedal that I’m going to need to spend some time learning. A few years back I had a Randy’s Revenge and I think I got frustrated with not understanding necessarily how Ring Modulation actually works, and fairly quickly sold it.

That’s sad! Randy’s Revenge is an all-time favorite of mine. Possibly the longest-running pedal in my possession.

I still think it’s an amazing pedal, I was just impatient with it.

I had a Moog MF-102 for a long while and sold it before I figured out what to really do with a ring modulator.

Well, I almost always play in DADGAD (or some variant thereof). Tends to lend itself to melodic playing. I haven't specifically tried tunings to maximize harmonic and/or melodic playing though. Definitely worth exploring to hear what works well for you.

any open chord tuning with lots of roots and 5ths will sound good....

Heack yeah, I placed it in Taken's feedback loop and got some gorgeous results too, although if you want some clean bell tones I think it would shine better with a pristine digital delay.

I find ring mods super fun with DADFAD tuning (which is basically like the one chank's suggested, with the G being dropped to F), also usually my go-to setupto find clean resonating tones is to use a single coil neck pickup, for maximum fatness and resonance.
With Feber in particular, I feel like it takes single coils a lot better than the - way hotter - humbuckers on my simil-LP.

I’ll try it in the loop of the Echosystem on a digital algorithm and see how that goes. Could be super cool with a reverse delay too!

I only have a telecaster, so yeah, single coils all the way into the Feber. It’s in at the guitar shop at the moment, but I should have it back today or tomorrow.
