I thought it was true of big muffs that higher "sustain" meant more treble?

Correct. The sustain and tone pots of the Big Muff circuit are interactive, so as you turn up the sustain, the tone pot needs to be dialed down slightly to keep the same tone range.

Got mine today. Sounds like a good muff. 
I certainly think it would fair very well in a blind test with something more pricey though, so I get the hype. I'll probably keep it around, although I still stand by the fact that muff tone pots are boring as fuck. Definitely nothing new there. Here's a pic for no real reason. Mix of thru-hole and surface mount and Russian Santa battery.
