Actually (savour this, it's rare) you're 100% right and I am convinced here that SRV is less good than I thought he was. This is actually a really great point.
What just happened
What just happened is that you read a statement about music made by someone who makes music and measured it on its own merits instead of instinctively trying to filter it through a predefined codification of "Important Thoughts On Music and What It Means" as handed down by some unseen group of Impeccably Tasted-ed folks who inevitably wear scarves in mild weather and compare the mint-ness of their Marquee Moon pressings.
Liberating, isn't it?

This is a loaded question, but on that note, what do you think of Slipknot's Beer Keg?

Rory Gallagher was such a fucking showman.
On top of being a great player.
So good.

No, that's not it. I could give a fuck about the scarf people.
I just have an open mind is all... and not ALL your opinions are drek
Fun fact: this is the second time since I joined ILF you've implied that people who make music have special insight into music. Need I remind you who fuels the masturbatory virtuoso market almost (wait for it) singlehandedly.

It goes clang. I approve.

being a musician is different than playing an instrument. You obviously place a high stock in reviews and other metrics of critical acclaim, and what I'm saying to you is that there's no real point in doing so.

Did it come with a free copy of Fieldy's Dreams?
Oh, please say that it did...Fieldy is a pretty nice guy and so is his bass tech. They used to come into the store/studio and talk for a bit.
Still love that the alley behind our Arena is called "KoRn Row"
Edit: can't stand KoRn by the way. They were just always around, esp. When that guitar player went Christian.

Uhm... the consumers?
Who are also wanky guitarists
Like, there is no one
listening to Guthrie Govan, JoBo, Satriani, Vai, who isn't trying to
be them
Admittedly, this is not necessarily true of SRV, nor of Tosin Abasi (who is better than the others mentioned)
(Actually I have a softspot for Guthrie as a person/teacher but Jesus, is The Aristocrats unlistenable)

Ummm, music is just dudes trying to get laid... Some of it's good and some of if sucks but it's not to be debated over or treated like a college course for studying... Listen to it or don't...

-1 to all of this
Talking about, debating, dissecting music... is my life
Also... music gets people laid and that's awesome, but if that's the only reason you're playing it sell your guitar and stop... it needs to be a lot more than that

Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll pretty much covers all the bases...
Music critics/rabid fanbois are much like the Fantasy Football crowd, a bunch a guys who can't anymore or never could do it living out their failed dreams vicariously through those that do...

I will listen to some Satriani or Vai. Their albums are widely hit-or-miss to me, but a couple songs is okay. Satch moreso as some of his songs can be stripped down like he did on MTV unplugged (who he shared with the not-yet-dead back then Ravon).
That first John 5 album was nice. Very hook-y and hummable. His later releases became a bit formulaic for me, like it was by numbers.
There's only 2 "wank" guitarists I "want to be" that's Buckethead due to his work ethic and huge back catalog aand John Petrucci ( but only 3 albums. Images&Words, Metropolis pt 2 and 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence).
Tosin Abasi is going into that John 5 territory. Animals as Leader's first album amazing. 2nd album more of the same, but more homogenized.
I feel masturbatory can also extend to drones and junk, too. any excess for its own sake. But people dontt much talk about the 3 chord singer song writers repeating the same songs over and over

I talk about them every Tuesday at my bar when they do 8 songs and take a break and come back and do those 8 with maybe a Hey Jude cover thrown in for good measure...
Wank comes in all forms and styles...
