They turn a third lug on/off based on whether a jack is plugged in, usually so that they can let signal go to ground (close the signal) when a jack isn't plugged in, for amps and other things that might get noisy with nothing plugged in (essentially the jack becomes an antenna with nothing plugged in, in my limited EM understanding.)

Definitely recommend going with a stereo jack for input and mono jack for output. Simpler than these seem to be and they have the cool side effect of shutting off the power to the pedal when nothing is plugged in. There's tons of guides / images online for wiring up this kind of true bypass. But yeah, I definitely recommend going with those over the switching (amp-style) jacks for pedals.

i need help yet again... you'd think i would finally understand this whole off board wiring thing by now..

so this is a rub a dub reverb with the volume mod. getting a signal when bypassed but nothing with the pedal engaged. i double checked my ground wiring, but i've been looking at it for a few hours now so i could be seeing things.

Is the TL072 backwards? I think the dot is near pin1.

Yep - the dot is the same as the indent on some packages.

Also, the text generally goes from the 1/8 pin side to 4/5 pin side.

i totally know how to put the IC in... i just remembered that when i soldered the socket onto the board, it was tilted a little and i wanted to make sure that the IC would still fit, so i put it in carelessly and forgot to take it back out.

anyways, it works great now.

okay... so (i think) i'm have a grounding issue. only getting a signal when bypassed.. jacks make static noise when i touch my fingers to them. i don't know when i will finally get the hang of this without missing something.

i realized that excluding the LED from the circuit would make it dead, so I put it in like the vero says, took out the old LED, and plugged it in.

first two problems are that the LED now stays on at all times, and the switch makes a very loud click whenever i press it. when engaged, the pedal DOES make some fuzz sounds, but the level and the fuzz knob don't seem to work.

Your images aren't showing for me, but are you talking about D2 on the vero layout? It sounds like you're trying to make D2 an LED indicator for ON/OFF, it's not. You still have to add an LED indicator (if you want one) to you're offboard wiring.

Sorry if I misunderstood you, and this means nothing. haha

Yeah, there's going to be your indicator LED and then your clipping LED (the board mounted one). All the LED is a clipping diode (Light Emitting Diode, led is just a diode), it has a different barrier voltage than say a 1N914 so it chops the waveform at a different amplitude giving you a different amount of distortion.

I honestly don't know if the function of D2 is for distortion, though. But it is definitely not an ON/OFF LED.

i keep running into this same issue of the signal coming through only when bypass is on. i've re wired this about three times now, checked the orientation of the elec. caps and transistors, and replaced the stopswitch. in "effect on" mode, i hear some low volume faint fuzz sounds and noise when i put my finger on the 3pdt... haaaallppp

What transistors are you using?

Q2 has an irregular pinout.

I'm using a 2N2222 for Q2, but I measured the leads with a multimeter to double check which one is which, and also tried changing the orientation a few different times.

That's probably your problem

You're going to have to twist around the collector and base leads for it to work, careful not to have them touching

Notice how the collector is the center pin for Q2 where it would normally be the base
