I've missed too much to drop my 2c...
Just sayin, "heya" before I head off to bed.
One day back at uni and I'm already stressed and under the pump.
Feels exciting and fucking terrifying.

So I'm just gonna assume they are and buy some new ones. I found some tung sol's for 5 bucks a pop so I'm going to pick those up.

Can anyone tell me what the 6an8 tube is for in this amp. I'm having trouble finding schematics to post so....
Have you posted pics of the amp? What EQ options do you have? I'm not familiar with that amp. My Sunn used a 6an8 as a phase inverter, but I think v4's also use 6an8's and it's for something else. This reply isn't helpful at all, haha. What's the preamp tube layout look like?

Does anyone know a program or site where I can simulate the effect of Xeroxing an image like 10 times?

This is the only pic I have right now of the faceplate from when I bought it.

Here's a better pic of the net.

It has two separate tube preamps (each side) that don't interact. One is active and one is passive.
It uses 3x 12ax7 1x 6an8 4x kt88, 6550 (or any other interchangeable with these tubes)

My question about the 6an8 is really just about whether or not changing will have a big effect on the tone.

Sorry for hijacking. To be on topic, this whores is cool.

As suggested earlier I would pull the preamp tubes and see what brand they are. Like also said earlier I've found EHX preamp tubes to be bright sounding, JJ's are where its at. Otherwise you might be able to have a tech do a simple treble mod and put a cap or resistor on the the input to bleed off excess treble.

Yeah I'm definitely going to pull the tubes. I haven't even touched the head in a month and only played it like three times. I'm going off of memory.

I'm going to talk to my tech about the mod. I didn't know about this until suggested. Makes perfect sense and that's some great info.

I'm really just getting myself prepped for when I go home next week. Been gone since 16 Jan. The life of the army is full of little 1-2 month trips. It is what it is.

Yeah the treble mod is basically like the difference between a Marshall Superlead and Superbass, one lil component that cuts treble. (I believe that's correct... :idk: )

If your in the Army and your life is full of only 1-2 month little trips your lucky, most of my friends lives the past 12 years were full of 9-18month trips.

JJs in this Orange are kind of bright, but they sound good. I pulled the one out of v1 to put a lower gain tube in there and put the JJ in my Soldano. Sounded pretty good in there. The rest are Tung Sol except for the phase inverter which is a balanced Sovtek. I just got a nos Sylvania to put in the v1 slot on the Orange. Can't wait to try that out tomorrow.

I found JJ's to be a hair bright also. Bright and kinda harsh. Once broken in the harshness goes away, but they are definitely not dark. I think you just need to play around with the EQ a bit and try different settings before swapping out tubes. Specially if they are new. Swapping them out to another brand will not fix a big EQ issue. A bright amp is more in the circuit than the brand of tubes.

Yeah these short trips are mixed in with the deployments. I got back from my third one last June. I switched from Infantry to satcom(satellite communications) after my second deployment to Iraq thinking maybe I'd get some reprieve, but they only got easier.

To me it's become the spice of life. Sure I give up stuff, but I get the opportunity to go new places, take a break from my regularly scheduled programming.(wife, kid, day to day.) Right now I'm in Georgia doing Advanced Leadership Course (I'm a Staff Sergeant.) But I had the chance to chill out.

That's really what I was thinking initially. How would y'all go about taming an EQ. This suggestion for the treble mod is great, but on top of that what type of pedal would you use? (I well do some extensive knob turning before I commit to buying a pedal I might not need. ;) )

So, I finally started the process of getting a custom bass cab built. We're gonna finalize our ideas by the end of the week. The two ideas I'm throwing around are for a big gnarly 6x12 or two smaller 4x12's to stack. Pros to two smaller 412's is portability and impedance matching. Pros to a 6x12 is less space taking and lower cost, but a big con is impedance mismatching. Either from the speakers to speakers, or total impedance to amp.

I've posted a few times about this in the last few weeks, but now that I started the process I gotta make up my mind. Advice/Suggestions?
