I've heard Sovtek MIG 100s can be dialed in to sound similar to V4s but I don't have much personal experience myself.

emptyparadigm wrote:OK doomroom bros, I'm thinking about putting the v4 in the closet for now. It's had reliability issues (shit on me twice live) and while it's been OK thus far, it gave me a scare last night. I just don't want to gig out with something that isn't crazy reliable. Plus, it has 99999 tubes, and retubing is a pricey pain in the ass. If I have to, I'll sell the v4, but I'd like to hold onto it for now.
So, looking for a tube head (preferably 100w) under 700ish dollars. I totally missed out on a bassman 135 on ebay for 390

I'll be running it into an Orange 4x12 and pairing it with a Sunn Beta into another Orange 4x12. Suggestions? Folks looking to sell? GO.
mayyybe wait for another 135 bassman?
I got my sunn 200s for 600? well but its 60 watts not 100. . . .
guitar or bass? what kinda cabs?

They're a darker voiced amp that takes gain pedals really well. Owes its lineage to ye olde JCM800. Awesome doom amps.
However the reliability is hit or miss. I've only had to change a fuse on mine (knock on wood), but I've heard some horror stories and seen them get dodgy.
Some other good gems off the top of my head include the Peavey Butcher (The older 80's/90's models, I don't know what the word is on the new ones) or a Red Bear MKE120.
How important is the badge on the front of the amp to you?

Nice job D.o.S. how could I forget Peavey? Honestly I would try to find a VTM 120 or Butcher. Definitely reliable and pliable (heh) in that you can dress them up or down with your appropriate level of gain. And the Butcher may have an effects loop too but I can't remember. Best of all, they can be had for dirt cheap.
I had a Red Bear MKE60 and it was cool as heck. But it had a virtually unusable amount of bass. The most bass I've ever seen in any guitar amp and if it was the 120 watt version I would have kept it as a bass amp. Another amp to be on the lookout for would be a Carvin x100b. The older, carpeted models from the 80s sound best from the internet's opinions but honestly you can't go wrong. I love mine

So this explorer has been the hardest guitar to buy. Guy has two different ad's with two different numbers (one he is selling two guitars, one being the explorer, and the other just the explorer by itself). One number is more legit than the other since he answered once and told me some info and wanted me to call back since he was driving. Call back an hour later and nothing. Found the second number called that no response and a generic voice mail message but unlike the first number, it wasn't full so I left a message but I doubt he will hit me up. I gotta call on some magical number, but now I know why this hasn't sold fast at all.

I hate no-show sellers.
Also, anyone get their hands and ears on that Bongzilla side project split that came out a while back? Not the Cuda record (what the fuck happened to them?) but Aquilonian?

Luckily old Peavey stuff seems to still be fairly anathema to the "it's loud and has tubes. I MUST HAVE IT" crowd.

(perfect shape v4 )
My local guitar center has one of these for $450? I didn't realize it's a good deal. I didn't try it out but I was looking at it. What does the polarity switch on these do?

umm yeah red*bear mk120s make retarded good bass amps. . . dont let that out of this fucking room. . . .
also no idea on the polarity switch. i think it was for hum back in the two prong cord days?
450 for a v4 is a good price if its clean. if it needs a retube and you want to keep the original tubes runnin in it get ready to be buttfucked.
