jeez, here i was complaining about the fact that my gf lives 35 miles away and so i only see her a couple of times a week was difficult. it’s kind of OK, though, because a lot of my life would be uninteresting to her. all that guitar tweaking would drive her up the walls.

I feel that. When my wife and I were living in the same city, she'd come by once a week and stay for the weekend. It felt like she got to see a kind of weekly "best of" summary of my life. It'll be interesting once we move in to see what every day is like.
edit: I'm betting it's a mix of good and bad. I am really excited to explore that with her.

Finally had the time to fix my guitar

it’s a cheap Cort strat type copy, but the volume pot stopped working at maximum settings and cables were loose in the socket so I kept getting a random square wave tremolo effect (cool until you don’t want that!). Anyway it was the first time I have ever opened up a guitar and replaced parts and it all worked

I have been putting this off for ages because I thought I would screw it up. I didn’t have a 500k pot for the volume, so used a 470k instead and it sounds the same so I guess that’s ok.
And on the other good news I did a nature survey for an environmental group I belong to and spotted some rare flowers. The Summer holiday is about to start and everything would be amazing except my wife has just caught shingles and is feeling dreadful… some you win, some you lose I guess.

the online electronics retailer i work for has decided to start stocking Fender and Squier guitars, amps, and accessories. on the one hand it’ll be nice to write about stuff i actually know and care about; on the other i’m going to be absolutely buried for all of October. it would have been more helpful if we’d done this a few years ago because i could have filled out my guitar group for less, but with my employee discount i might pick up a couple of useful things. i wouldn’t pay $629 for an Acoustasonic Standard Telecaster, but for $200? bitch, i might.

What’s dealer cost on the WRHBs?

don’t know…so far we’re only showing electric and acoustic guitars, amps, and accessories (cables, tuner, etc.). i could be dangerous if we got them.

I will say I’ve had very positive experiences with the Hammertone series pedals, and your work may view those as normal/basic enough to stock. Happy to spam their search if you think there’s other things they may buy into.

they’ve got a group consisting of corporate buyers and actual musicians with decades of experience doing the product selection. for now they’ll be feeling their way to a certain extent. this could be great, or turn into a debacle like our foray into Yamaha acoustics some time back. i’m definitely in the back seat here.

Taught myself to solder SMD components! Really tiny things… I need magnifying lenses to see them! This means no longer having to worry about getting hold of discontinued J201 transistors anymore! They are in lots of old pedal circuits and I can now buy daughterboards to solder them to and add the trimmed off legs of resistors or capacitors to add new legs to the daughterboards and they fit the pinouts of any pre existing circuit that uses J201’s… probably nobody else but me will care about this but I’m happy

I never thought I could solder something that small without frying / melting it!

Totally cool. DIY self reliance and not being at the whim of “mojo” component supply is pretty great.

Thanks! The price of some discontinued through hole components keeps going up as they get rarer, so knowing that I can make perfect replacements myself for cheap is great! Plus not having to buy them from dodgy characters on ebay means that when I’m debugging a pedal I know that it’s not working due to something I did and not because it’s a fake part!

Seeing a classic ILFer return is a bonus anytime it happens, so that’s a reason for me to add to the thread.
