I've gotta say, I hate seeing people talk about instruments as "investments".
It's a guitar, not a house. If you're so concerned about resale then don't even bother getting one in the first place.
Get off your high horse and enjoy something once in a while.

I agree to this, to some extent. I sort of baby my SG but that doesn't keep me from playing the hell out of it. I don't expect to ever sell it.

Instruments are meant to be played, imho, and so you have to spend enough to get one that is nice for you to play (cheap can be good, but some people suffer on cheap instruments) and not something that's too expensive or frail to never touch. That's my general rule of thumb.

I don't mind babying an instrument because you love it, it's when people are sooooooo worried about devaluing an instrument.

I agree, got sick of the Yuppie lawyers and dentists with their “Vintage gear” they never played.

What’s the point of having a ’53 what ever with “THE TONE” of it never gets played? There is no tone coming from an un-played instrument.

On the other hand a lot of the cheap crap built in the ‘50s and ’60 soured a lot of people on playing. Sure there are great guitarists who can make a Harmony or Dano sing, but they are few and far between.

As far a new stuff goes. I played a 10 grand bass that was sterile and lifeless and a Squire that sounded better than most of the AM standards that GC had that day.

Invest in stocks, real-estate, or what ever.

I don’t understand the current rage of butt ugly basses made of super exotic woods and 10,000 strings but what do I know.
Why do people pay 2 or 3 grand for a copy of a Fender?

I do like the Rob Allen mouse though, so I would almost loosen my purse strings for one of them. I actually would loosen them if I had the money to spend.

Double amen. Coffee-table wank-basses can suck it. And if I wanted a Fender-type bass that wasn't Fender or G&L, I'd make it out of Warmoth parts and get exactly what I wanted for cheap. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I saw this at NAMM and had to take a pic...what a fucking joke. Pretty sure it was crafted from a fossilized mastodon penis.

why is it that bassists want these weird shapes and keep adding strings, while the majority of guitar players want an exact replica of guitar models designed & built in the 1950s? (aside from the few guitar players on 7 strings or baritones)

They are trying to break the stereotype by becoming a stereotype... also cool shapes are cool [as long as you think the design is cool  ] take me, I like flying Vs.. a lot... I have one V bass and two guitars and I am builting a five string V bass for a new main squeeze and I am building a V bass VI out of ebayed parts :animal:

fuck all y'all. i LOVE my 6 string Dingwall. no odd shape, but i guess the fanned frets are weird. stupid amounts of SMART... but mebbe weird.

and i would trade my left nut (it's the smaller one!) for a Carl Thompson.

also, those last boobies were IDEAL.

i wish my tits looked that good.

I want a 6er every now and then :idk: I even can see a 7er being cool if it had a guitar pickup under the high strangs and a bass pickup under the low ones :idk:
