Thinking of upgrading from my YBA-3 to an early 70's SVT up on CL. The Traynor doesn't come close to cutting it next to the guitar rigs. Never played an SVT though. Not sure what I can expect. Thinking it won't be a bad idea having one around, at least until I can get my hands on a 200+ watt KT88 Matamp style amp. Plus, I would love to get a full/thick sound through one amp and cab as oppose to two amps and two cabs like I'm doing now, just to be heard. Opinions? I know I've seen a few other early SVT's here.

Maybe a couple 100 watt heads would get you there? Those earth/plush heads sound great on bass.

That's what I'm doing now with my YBA-3 through a borrowed avatar 2x12 (or sometimes a dually 2x15) and a borrowed Beta Bass through my 8x10. I get enough volume but at times I'll have phasing issues when I wanna use certain pedals on each amp (even with an ABY with phase switch) and also mismatching volumes and certain frequencies with placement and differences in cabs, blah blah blah, etc. But, I would prefer to get a loud and thick sound, able to keep up with our guitarist pushing my Sound City and Sunn on each side, using a single amp with my 810 (been really digging sealed cabs lately), which I've never been able to pull off since starting this band I'm in. I like the sound of a clean/dirty stereo rig like I'm doing now but, again, been dealing with some inconveniences. Idk (I'm a guitar player filling in on permanent bass duty )

Yeah I hear ya on the phasing and whatnot. Two of the heads/cabs I use are somewhat similar (speakers are the exact same) and one is very different and on some parts it changes where the center of my sound comes from. I kind of like that. Actually, I like it a lot. Perhaps using heads that are more similar would get you what you want, and you could keep the stereo setup.

I mean, if it's easy to obtain financially, there are fewer things sweeter than 300w of backbreaking tone. Unless you can get a 2000s.

Dude wants $1500 for a '71 blueline, fresh caps and tune up, plus a road case. I've never been into SVT's so I don't know what they go for. This just kinda popped up. I have around $1000 of non used gear I could sell, so essentially I'll only throw down $500 out of pocket once it all sells.

I would love a 2000s but if I can't keep up with my YBA-3, and I also couldn't keep up with my 140w Univox, I'm not sure a 2000s would cover enough ground. I have a 200s right now and it's far far from able to keep up on bass (though it's super dreamy on guitar). I'm also killing a few decibels given I'm using a sealed cab (vintage 810) compared to a vented one, which do make my YBA-3 much louder than my 8x10. I used to keep up when I had my Univox (140w) with my Acoustic 408.... but again, I wanna keep my 810 since sealed is my preferred choice. Specially for the faster type of jams we play (link in sig if interested).

There's a Meatsmoke in my area for the same price (sans road case) but that would be essentially the same as the SVT in volume/power. But given I've never cared big for SVT type amps (including the Meatsmoke), at least enough to research them and play, I thought perhaps the SVT will be easier to flip if I don't dig it and/or use as trade bait for something else like a Hiwatt or Matamp 200 if the opportunity came up?

Svt's rule. That's a good price with the road case and all. I can't imagine you would regret that. They're loud as shit and sound awesome. My favorite bass amp.

Everyone I've heard using a Meatsmoke sounds fantastic. Verellen owners I have talked to seem to love the support Ben provides for his amps. It's made with new components that are potentially less likely to fail over the next 20 years or so. I'd at least make an effort to go try it out.

As for the 2000s, AFAIK it's essentially the same amp as my 1200s, more bass specific I think? When I got it back from Brian East he said it was putting out something in the neighborhood of 160 watts on old tubes that were not 100% and that he thought it was capable of more. I use mine with the GK weirdo folded horn I have and when I feel like slappin da bass, it crushes.

Is there any way you could try out some different speaker setups? Also, I recall reading about the possibility of mis matched out of phase cabs resulting in reduced perceived volume. The simple check to find out if this is the case was to turn one cab 180 and if it sounds louder they are wired out of phase. the fix was to reverse the positive and neg leads to the speakers,

Or better yet, do the 9 volt test by removing the grill, applying 9 volt current to the normal pos and neg. you should see the speakers move in the same direction if everything is good.

Side note - Was going to buy either that jazzie I posted or a different dearmond 7 string as my boss is buying my black back up one, but then I found out my old guitar player is selling his Chicago Iron Parachute wah for relatively cheap (compared to what they go for on eBay or new) so I had to jump on it as I've been in the market for a wah and thats the one I REALLY wanted. Freakin excited.

This seems like a really good point.

I remember about 10 years ago a bandmate of mine had inherited lots of gear from his dad.
They only a food distribution type place and there's tons of gear stored there. Some really awesome old Acoustic stuff (we used the 2x15 with horn for guitar for the longest time... stopped working and we haven't looked at it since) and a whole bunch of other shit.

In any event, they found a vintage OG Ampeg SVT. I couldn't give you the exact year but my friend's dad is reasonable old and has had that amp for forever.

It was in pretty rough shape electronically. I'm sure tubes were still original but it wasn't working correctly. It powered on but not much else. At some point in time bees had made a nest inside of it, no shit.

My buddy trades it for an SVT Classic 300 and gets some cash to boot.

All I'm saying is... if you pickup the SVT and don't like it I think you'll break even on the flip and you'll be able to flip it faster, or so I'd like to believe.

I want to encourage you to get a Meatsmoke because every time I've heard one I've really enjoyed it but I've also listened to your band enough times to know that the context in which I've heard it is not the same context as what you play, ultimately Russian Circles, Helms Alee is not the brand you're subscribing to sonically with your current effort. That's not to say a Meatsmoke wouldn't work out for you quite nicely, it's just to say that I haven't heard one played in that style to see how well it fits.
