We could start a worst band on ILF thread if we wanted to amp the salt levels up to infinity.

D.o.S., you keep me guessing. You like Derek Trucks. I kinda like Derek Trucks, too. But whereas I like pretty much everything under the sun, you're very discerning... and you choose to like Derek Trucks.
It's good! Just weird.
Why Trucks, and not SRV...?

Because SRV is just recital music. There's no real interplay with the rest of the band, it's just OMG LOOK AT HIM GO ON THAT GEEETAR. I have little patience for most kinds of that kind of music in general, which is very different from jam bands or bands that jam, and SRV is the patron saint of that style of music -- the virtuosity for virtuosity's sake stuff. I would much rather listen to Johnny Thunders (edit: Johnny Winter but I'd rather listen to Johnny Thunders than SRV every day of the year) or Rory Gallagher: they make it much less about the ego and much more about the music, and that's fairly evident in their playing.

This is the point where it's probably worth saying that nearly all of my formative musical experiences came while being a bass player having to coexist with guitarists who were generally not bothered by this -- the Mustang Sally phenomenon, if you will.

Actually (savour this, it's rare) you're 100% right and I am convinced here that SRV is less good than I thought he was. This is actually a really great point.
What just happened
A few posts down, someone posted John Mayer, which is sorta fair, but not in the John Mayer Trio. Pino Palladino (who replaced Entwistle in The Who, fun fact) is not a background dude IMO.

Not saying I hate Pino but not a good example.. Please keep in mind that some of us are actually bassists and saying that is like saying yeah the dude that replaced Jimi Hendrix.. in the greater scene of things The Ox is more important to bassdom than Jaco.
Also.. about the SRV thing… for the most part that is what is called playing electric blues… have played MANY shows where the "band" is supporting a front man that although very talented isn't very good at playing with others and you have to follow them about..

I hate SRV as a musician. I have never "gotten" it. Maybe it was 15 years of hype that just didn't deliver.
Listening to SRV is like watching sports to me. It just doesn't click. There's zero investment. No reason to care. Yet people talk about it like its the best thing and all they need in their life.
But on that Coheed album. I foud out its their first album outside of their saga. What is the point? Why do No World for Tomorrow and beyond?
