Ring Mod is one of my favorites for drone and ambience especially if you can add a expression pedal. Kayzer has some great ring mod videos on YouTube for some good examples. I've also been enjoying the Arpanoid when used with an Ebow and looper to have as a foundation to build off of. I really like the Boomerang looper because I can multiple loops going and can peel them back in layers and have them offset which is cool or sync'd up but I rarely do that. I'm going to add yet another moogerfooger to my board in a few days, the freqbox along with an expression pedal. The Red Panda Particle is another favorite especially set to the random reverse/forward delays. They have a new bit crusher coming out as well that I'm curious in. I also love a versatile reverb on my synths. The shimmer thing gets a bit played out on guitar but is awesome on synth especially with some slow, deep flange for movement.

Just finally reading through this thread, I've been messing around with acoustic/electric drone recently with a mandolin and acoustic guitar. That said, I'm trying to move to Bass VI+drums+drone synth and other synths soon. My rig is a V4 into two 810's with an HM2, a Supercollider, a Dirge Delay in a wah shell, an FZ2, an RV3, a BF2, a Noisemaker Nebula, and a Ditto X2. I have a digitech hardwire phase/tremolo I need to make sure still works, but other than that what should I be looking into? I like spacey and ambient but still heavy. Basically I want to start a sci-fi themed drone project.

Definitely add a ring mod or pitch shifter of some sort. That'll get you some metallic clang and a bunch of high pitched squeals.

I have a whammy that will get used for sure, what ring mod do you guys recommend? I've been considering one anyways.

Depends on what you'd like as far as options and CV ins and outs. A Moog ring or a Ring Stinger clone are both pretty full featured and can provide a bunch of CV ins and outs as well as sound amazing. So I'd look for:

Moog Ring Mod
Ring Stinger (you'll probably want to find a clone)
Fairfield Randy's Revenge

Digitech PDS units also are great for looping noises and warping them, you've got delay covered but I've never played anything like the 20/20

I like the Moog MF-102, the Fairfield Randy's Revenge is also really good and has a smaller footprint.

Both sound very different though! While the Moog is crisp and clear and sounds like a scalpel (in a good way) the Randy is warmer and sounds nice. I have both and could not do without either. For how I imagine your playing, BoatRich, the Randy might be better suited.

Yessss, I finally found a Kaoss Pad 3 for a decent price. Next I'm gonna get my crappy little mixer back from a friend, buy an expression ped for my Randy and get seriously droning. Kinda GASing for a Ditto, Grendel and a digital tanpura, but for now I have a decent setup with the KP, Minitaur, Sleepdrone5, bass and shitloads of pedals.

Behringer's iPad dock (for my old iPad 2) is also tempting. Is it any good? On paper it seems pretty nice, it has all the right connections and all, but I've had trouble with every Behringer product I've used except for my mixer.

Behringer is a crapshoot: I have things from them that have lasted for years and years, but I've also seen stuff from them that's reached Paperweight status in a very short period of time.

For some reason the Behringer mixers I've used have all been bulletproof. Pretty much every other product was a piece of crap.

Nope not really, just amp worshiping by myself but I did just pick up a EHX Freeze and that's a pretty cool tool for drone.

Yeah I added a Freeze to my board recently as well. Very useful when trying to sound bigger and more complex than I am since I'm the only guitar player. Has anyone here ever seen Chord live? I'm curious how that translates live, I'd imagine quite well and it seems like a really interesting concept for drone.

Can the freeze pick up chords or just single note stuff?

Also, does anyone have experience with the Raptio in freeze mode? I want it for the glitch, but the freeze mode is also good.

Any drone players planning to pick up the EQD Afterneath? Or tried duplicating that sound with a smeary multitap delay? (Seems like the H9's UltraTap algorithm ought to be able to achieve this, and maybe the EHX SMMH as well.)

My reverb weapons of choice are an EHX cathedral and an industrialectric Reverb Machine.

Fell in love with the I/E verb in the tour box, my production build should be showing up any day now.

Been playing a lot with cascading the two channels of the cathedral. Need to get one or two tb loops so I can do so properly and make such a config a main stay on my board. Possibly set it up so the two channels remain in series but at different point in my chain, likely with various dirt in between.

Doubt it'll cover the same territory as the afterneath, but I've been imagining jerry rigging a cheap multi delay solution. Somewhat inspired by the dba ghost echo - 3x micro MIC delays (donner party? Whatever the cheap mooer alt is called) with a passive volume ctl, all in tb loop - ghetto ghost echo. Could be a fun experiment for approx $100. If I end up really digging it, get a custom drilled enclosure and call it a day.
