I don't know if that is substantially different from the Mesa 400+, but I know that Tool's Undertow was recorded with a 400+, and that is one of my favorite bass tones ever on an album. So if it's the same or similar, then that should be beastly

They're awesome. I only have in-store experience, but Mesa makes sexy preamps and that bastid sounded delicious.

Oh man ... I know it will sound awesome. Am I actually looking for the opposite, someone to talk me out of it? fuck.
If it halps,...Mrak Ollysen suggested getting a Super Lead to me once.

EDIT: Oh I see you moved on it,...soooo nevermind. I just couldn't resist a jab at kitten fuckers.
RE: M/B 400 (non plus),....I think it's just a lower powered version of the 400+

i was just going to set up 2 12's with my normal ss poweramp and 2 12's with his head, use an a/b box (i think i have an EHX Switchblade laying around here somewhere) to go out the pedalboard into each setup.
sigh. might need to buy a big toobie. durn it.
My ED130 was 300.00. My wife told me just to wait and not panic when I was looking at amps 1000 dollars +
100 watts and the damn thing can shatter my ear drums. I am sure you can find a good deal bender if you just keep dem peepers open.

that's another thing that mystifies me...... why the disparity on wattage ratings? i use a 500ish watt per channel poweramp and get very, very loud about halfway up. but from what i hear peoples say about Dem Toobz, around 100 to 200 is just a HUGE amount of power?
wassat?

The high powered solid state stuff is for players who have a very light touch and want it super clean imo.
100 Watt tube head is fine if you don't mind a bit of dirt. Don't forget the main thing with the power disparity is that 100 watt tube rating is clean signal before breakup and most people like a bit of tube breakup/overdrive so the actual power can be quite a bit higher than 100 watts. Solidstate breakup is usually nasty sounding so these amps need a super high clean rating so we have plenty of headroom before any chance of break up.
30-50 watt tube head are great for guitar because you can push them into overdrive at lower volumes than 100 watt plus head.
That's all before we get into the relationship between power, speaker area and perceived volume.
