1/4" is the standard. You can still get tape for 1/4" rather cheap and that is what all the old reel to reel albums are, so this means you can now start collecting vintage reel to reel tapes which sound GREAT!

Lucky bastard! i have an old reel-to-reel that i need to get rewired because it keeps shocking me. :< Want so very badly.
I recorded a couple of htings on it once, it has a great little tube amp inside of it.
