As far as adding a gain knob, you pretty much just lower the bits are you get more gain.

in certain modes you can adjust the average value of the LFO. (ie the middle value). For example with autorate its just warbling the sampling rate up and down. normally the rate knob controls th rate of the LFO. But if you hold down the encoder for about 1 second then adjust the rate pot you will notice its not adjusting the rate anymore. Try the 2 extremes to get the idea. First hold down the encoder then go full CW on the rate pot then release the encoder. you should hear not that much aliasing because the LFO is varying the sampling frequency about some relatively high sampling rate. Now do the same thing again but CCW and you will hear extreme amounts of aliasing because the lfo is moving about a very low sampling rate.

Similar idea applies to shbliss and blipo.

Plunger also uses this function but not to control the same paramater. If you hold down the encoder then move the rate pot such that it is to the CCW of center, the mode will constantly de-rate the sampling frequency (untill some limit then start over). IF you move the rate pot so that it is CW of center then the mode will constantly increase the sampling frequency. (Ramp up or ramp down )

hopefully that makes some sense. the best way to hear the effect is maybe to loop a steady sound into it for a minit and play with this feature.

yes, in a way this is normal. Although 8 can be as loud as 1 depending on what level your input signal has. Also the modes in Hostile will probably seem louder if your input signal is not that strong.

If I am playing the A string consistently as i turn through the digits.. level knob at noon... 8 is too quiet and 1 is almost blowing speakers. Its a wide range of volume..

what sort of pick ups do you have?

it seems louder because as you lower the resolution there are less voltage levels the output can take. so eventually at 1 bit res you only have 2 options (min or max). Any signal over half max goes to max and any signal below go to min. this means even a small signal will get a volume boost. its a consequence of lowering the resolution. so in one way it is the nature of bit reduction itself. (recall also a square wave vs a sine wave, both with the same amplitude, the square will seem louder because it in fact carries more power, with one bit you can only draw square like waves).

that being said the stage going into the DAC has a gain of 3. if you would like to increase it so that higher res sounds louder with your setup i can tell you what resistor to change or if you mail it back to me i can install a trim pot instead so that you can dial it to your desired level.

...place it in any effects loop with a kick ass boost after it (or in the Fuzzhugger Hugger/ Vice Grip loop), and control the boost knob with either TIP Third Hand or KickDisk.

Considering the vol drop from bit crushing & voltage reducing, it should turn out to be a smart move.

This and my 4545 go SO well together! It acts like a fat boost (at the end of the 4545), and does crazy robot type sounds.
