Well it depends on whether I come up with the lyrics or the music first.
Some lyrics just come with their own sound, I hear it and feel it.
Others are sitting in my note book waiting waiting.
If the music comes first, riff, bass line or melody, it may stay instrumental or get lyrics later.
It’s funny how words will pop into my head months later that just fit music that had no direction before.
So I guess I’m from the spontaneous eruption school.

i try to write in big blocks.
i'll force myself to sit down and write 15-20 songs in a 12-20hour sitting.
after the frist 10 songs I'm forced to imagine new composition ideas that might not really deliver
ie: awkward chord changes, awkward rhythm changes, changing lyrical themes....
songs can be written lyrics first
riff first
based on an effect
a bass line
or just a programmed beat.
but i only consider a song written once i've got a lead sheet written that i can go back to and replay the song completely from start to finish.
recording a quick demo always helps. but i try not to get carried away with recording a complete song as i'm writing it anymore.
and then i'll listen to them for a week and pillage the good stuff and piece a decent song or two from the session and then invest myself to recording and layering it.

It's completely colabrative with my band. We all come together with ideas and elaborate on them. Usually works out for the best

it has been a while since i last wrote a song but i dont really write songs. i really dont do lyrics unless it is some spoken word type chant and as you guys can tell i am no wordsmith to begin with.
my cousin always laughs at me because all my songs are at least 6 minutes long and tend to strech out much longer than that. we are not talking droning feedback here but "math rockish" sort of deals i suppose. i also spent 6 years or so just playing with a drummer that used to follow the dead around so he was like, wait, you want to play an hour long guitar solo??? sweet dude!!!
so if i am jamming around just relaxing and run into something cool i do it over and over and over until i find some were else to take it. if i sit down and say i need to come up with a riff or a bridge or something i tend to stress out and force and nothing seems to get done. i try to keep a zoom h2 running and then go back and listen to it to see if there was anyting cool that should be revisited.
i do have a knack for comming up with epic riffs while my cousin is over to jam/write/practice or what ever while he is in the bathroom. it has happened at least 3 times and one was our song What Ever You Say, Boss....
he comes flying out of the bathroom all HEY REMEMBER THAT!!!! and i am oh shit... remember what now...

It'll ussually start with me coming up with a few parts that work together and then my band will just have a day where we jam and hang and have another practice during the week which is more of a practice/rehearsal type deal so on sundays me and the drummer will just jam the shit out of everything untill we think we have a basic stricture of half a song then the other guys will come in and jam it with us.
We tend to write vocals/lyrics about a month before we want to debut a new song live even if we've been playing it instrumentally for a while at practice's.
I'm not sure why...

by 1,2,3, Pull Out!
1. Fuck around on guitar or synth until I find something cool.
2. Write other parts that that will be used in the same song.
3. Loop and write parts to go along with other parts on various instruments where necessary.
5. Record with a simple drum beat.
6. Make vocal melody.
7. Write lyrics.
8. Make drums better if necessary.
Note: this whole process is rarely ever completed. I almost never finish songs. It's much easier with a band.

i usually don't have to think too much...shit just happens..but we're working on a double album and decided to approach it a little different...I first got together approx 75-85 pieces of music and sent them off to the other members(we live very far away from each other) and they were told to do whatever they want w/ it...no rehearsing or talking about the ideas...when we get together in a month or so we'll sort all that shit out...we're going to do a musical representation of Dante's Inferno and base each songs feel on a chapter in the book(9 for each circle plus 10 subpieces for the Bolgia)...seem to got in a bit over my head at first but after about 3 months it just started flowing...going to be some kinda black metal opera of sorts...The Who's Tommy meets Leviathan's Speed Of Darkness...but fuckin cosmic!!!...hopefully anyway
